The Golden Heart Awards are an annual gala benefitting God’s Love We Deliver, “New York’s leading provider of medically tailored meals for people with severe illnesses.”
"Singing aside – and, as Fanny successfully makes her case for fame in a song called I’m The Greatest Star, singing is most of the point – Michele also handily carried the show’s vaudevillian humor and Fanny’s transformation from chorus line wannabe to young bride to seasoned star with a combustible marriage. Whereas Feldstein played Fannie as more precocious and naive, even after her marriage to gambler Nicky Arnstein (Ramin Karimloo), Michele’s Fanny is more scrappy and sensual; she’s a much more convincing partner, emotionally and physically, to Karimloo’s suave, older Nicky. Michele’s Fanny brims with determination and potent self-delusion – the kind one needs to become a star, the kind that propelled both her character on Glee (who went on to star in a fictional revival of Funny Girl) and Michele’s own fraught celebrity. It is, in other words, a very good fit of actor and character, and the type of meta pop culture moment that delivers the thrill of feeling fated."
I know Lea's "Don't Rain on My Parade" is iconic and electrifying. But, when she performs "People," man oh man. Something about it. It pours out of her. I think it is my favorite of her song performances in the show.
I'm still a bit shocked at all the bootleg uploading to YouTube, sorry if this has been answered but is it annoying sitting in the audience with people shamelessly getting their phones out or is it discreet? I'd like to be able to catch the show if I can but I don't want to be frustrated at seeing phones out everywhere (already resigned that I won't be able to hear her sing the actual score at points, lol).
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
The person who filmed these of Lea is an isolated incident. I can gladly assure you that you won’t be witnessing people holding up their phones to film a show. In my 40 plus years of seeing Broadway shows, I’ve never witnessed anyone bootlegging a show.

While I have seen one other video of I'm The Greatest Star by Lea and Temporary Arrangement from the early previews, for the most part only one person has videos on YouTube of Lea - 13 at the present time. There are a number of audio boots or portions of the show of both Beanie and Julie.
A friend of mine said that there were cameras now that look like regular eyeglasses, and I wonder if that is how the videos of Lea were made. I've seen boots of other shows, and the quality of these are superior to any others I've seen. The woman who did these has a very large collection of boots.
Since another trip to NYC is out of the question for me, I am grateful to see as much of the show as possible with Lea and Ramin with a great partner. I know there are a lot of others who feel the same and appreciate the fact that the producers are letting these slide.
Mr. Rex Reed did not care for Ms. Lea Michele.Oh well, can't win 'em all."
He did get it right about Ramin. But, go figure, he's the only critic who liked Beanie.
“Ms. Michele and the handsome, gifted Ramin Karimloo as the first Nicky Arnstein who can really sing, act, and dance. (Eat your heart out, Omar Sharif.) I still don’t understand why they added extra songs from the movie version, but I’m grateful for the wonderful “Funny Girl,” which the penultimately dazzling Mr. Karimloo sings with a poignant quality where it’s most needed between bombasts.”

I always find it lazy when people refer to belting as screaming and list that as a negative. He has a very special opinion on what counts as good singing...
"Therein lies the intangible core of Michele's success in this role — the culmination of a long and public saga that has added a new chapter to Funny Girl's already dense mythology. Her voice is clear and powerful. Her acting has contour and texture. But not even those technical proficiencies explain the gravitational X factor that leaves one wanting to experience a performance over and over again. It's the X factor that makes a Fanny Brice."

I did not know Rex Reed was still around. I am glad to see he has not lost his sense of humor. The chewing the scenery line was priceless! I have to agree on the musical number that he thought was horrid. I would not have used it thus trimming the second act.

Rat-tat-tat-tat is on YouTube if anyone wants to see it. The first 1 minute and 41 seconds are two male dancers (the same men from Cornet Man, I suspect), who are brilliant dancers, but almost two minutes before Fanny makes her entrance? The entire number runs just over 5 minutes, so, yeah, Reed got that right.

When I watched the YouTube clip, I had the same thought. But when I saw it in person, it was highly enjoyable.
Yeah, the Rat-a-tat number is a clinker, at least watching on video. I have read numerous times that it (and Coronet Man) was one of the numbers that Beanie did well at and I wish there was video of. I can see how that would have been in her wheelhouse. But I'm sorry, Lea and Coronet Man is my ministry. I watch that and the Finale at least once a week.
I am curious about one thing with Rat-a-tat for those who have seen the show with both Lea and any of the other ladies. Was the mustache bit always in the number? And if it wasn't, I wonder if it was a genuine blooper from Lea's first night that they decided to work in, or if it was always some "business" Lea and/or Mayer chose. Either way it's the only thing in the number I enjoy.

As good as those videos are they do not compare to seeing them performed live. They lane differently. I liked Rat-Tat-Tat a lot but it was Cornet Man that I really really loved.

The mustache came off again last weekend. They probably decided to go with it since it added more to the comedy.

Yeah, but when you don't have an extra $1500+ lying around to cover the trip and tickets (even using Priceline), the videos are a real treat. Overall the videos are great - even Sadie, Sadie. Perhaps in context, Rat-tat-tat might work. I just felt the opening with the two dancers was too long - almost 2 minutes. My personal favorite is Who Are You Now, but it always was, even before the video. People and the Finale are top notch. I also have to agree with Rex Reed about Funny Girl - great bit of acting and singing by Ramin. I only wish she had taped Temporary Arrangement.

I agree with that not everyone can go to see it in person for various reasons, but that doesn't mean one should judge the performance based on leaked video clips.
The rat-tat-tat was much more enjoyable than expected in person and actually didn't feel long or out of place.

Good for you. Glad you enjoyed it. Glad you were able to see it in person. I am still entitled to my opinion based on what I saw. I've watched Anything Goes a dozen times on video which is much longer and never get tired of it. To each his own.
