Well I'm not going to post a full reveiw before I see her one more time but my thoughts about Amber's performance are really different than yours carryme. About the only points I agree on are that she towered over everyone and she looked good. I wasn't really expecting to be blown away by her singing (although I was a little surprised she chose to speak some of Bend & Snap) but I *was* really hoping for more sass and found her portrayal to be flat. It wasn't the lively fun performance I had imagined in my head, again first time jitters might have had something to do with it, we'll see but I was slightly disappointed.
I know the insert wasn't wrong. I just didn't know that Andy's tracks were divided among understudies, until I saw the insert and the show last night.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
December 12, 2007 at 8:00pm Paulette - AMBER EFÉ Serena - CARA COOPER Store Manager/Judge - LINDSAY NICOLE CHAMBERS Grandmaster Chad - ROD HARRELSON Pforzheimer/Dewey/Kyle - JASON GILLMAN Beer Bash Dancers - MANUEL HERRERA, RUSTY MOWERY
I only wrote out the roles/tracks that were different. All other roles/tracks were performed by their usual actors.
Amber Efe's Paulette? AMAAAZING!!! Loved her. Loved the fact that she had her own costumes (they don't just costume her in the same outfits that Orfeh's Paulette wears), loved her *hair,* loved how fierce her Ireland was- her Bend and Snap was great too, but of the two Paulette numbers I could listen to her Ireland over and over again, she managed to nail both the hilarity of some of the lines (I almost died on her delivery of "some slut named Kayla") while still bringing the emotion, loved that she completely brought the fun to this role. Loved her- if you can catch her last scheduled show tonight you should do so!
And then can we talk about how fabulous Lindsay Nicole Chambers is for a sec? (Did I already do this post? Because I've been thinking it for a while now.) She's been great in pretty much every track I've ever seen her in, and I wasn't there that night but I hear she was also a fabulous 'Erin' Schultz the night she filled in for Noah Weisberg (although I am still curious as to how the "get you high and laid" line played with her in his track). She was in Amber's track tonight and, again, fabulous work.
Does anyone know if Beth going on for Margot was just a one time thing or planned?
I'm loving the look of the understudy board, it really does make you see the show from a completely different perspective with other people in the roles.
I think Lindsay Chambers is one of the unsung heroes of LB. I saw her Chutney amongst others and she's perfect and very funny in all her roles. As for Amber Efe', it was not at all what I expected. I have been looking forward to this a long time and she was a big let down. Yes, she looked great but that was about all. There was no spark, no energy and I thought her voice was going to be alot better and unlike rup, I was expecting to be blown away by her singing as well as her acting. I guess it's different to be able to sing 2 solo lines amazingly during her regular part than 2 *songs*. I like Amber but I did not like, let alone love her Paulette. I guess the best way to put it is, for me, there was a disconnect. Amber's Paulettte was very cold.
Yeah, she went on between Annaleigh leaving and Haven Burton coming in. I meant to ask whether or not she would be on for a couple of days now or just a one time deal last night. Sorry about the confusion.
There were quite a few understudies on today, Gaelen was AMAZING as paulette! Matthew Ricsh was awesome as warner too! Laura had a great show, she hit the note at the end of "so much better" and had tons of energy. The show was great!
Snuck in for a bit today, Sat. and I will have to say that Matt Risch is one of the most beautiful men on the face of the universe as Warner. Put him in a suit kill me now, and He can act. All the understudies in this show are extremely strong, great casting you guys!
tonight is going to be understudy heaven as per kate shindle's myspace. the following is tonight's cast
paulette- gailen gilliand vivienne- tracy jai edwards warner- matthew risch kyle- jason gillman
and obviously understudies on as serena, elle's mom, carlos, and the harvard board

swings are cast members with no normal role in the show who can fill in for virtually any ensemble track. I.E. when Becky Gulsvig goes on as elle a swing plays her ensemble roles

I "accidentally" saw the show again this afternoon, as a friend had an extra ticket. Wow. It was pretty dismal with all those understudies on. If Laura Bell Bundy had the star power to sell the show, it wouldn't have mattered for so many featured actors to be out, but alas, she doesn't. As for the understudies, I guess Matt Riche was the best, but mostly just for standing there and looking cute (even if I think Richard Blake is actually cuter). Gaelin Gilliland was way too serious and "normal" as Paulette--her "Ireland" got so few laughs that she could have been singing "I Dreamed a Dream." They really need the kooky charms (and SINGING!!!) of Orfeh! With the regular stars, there are things to like about the show. But today all the flaws were really magnified.
