I know DGrant, my eyes popped outa my head when I read that quote since I have never gotten the kind of mudslinging right to my face (that is, until MJLC article!!) as I do every and anytime I post on a message board!!
Helsinki was far too brilliant to write about yet...must let it settle in...seeing again tonight (opening night)

*whines annoyingly* But u will tell us eventually? Kinda curious how some of the jokes translate/travel culturally.
I admit seeing the promo video was one of the few times I've contemplated using "chemicals" to enhance an already enjoyable experience but then -i think of my job and Occ health and peeing into bottles and refrain. *sigh*

I will take a Hairspray or Producers over one of La Chuisa's shows any day of the week. I did like his Wild Party though
Musicals should be entertaining & not boring. I listen a lot to other cd's but rarely his. What can I say ? We are all entitled to our opinion. He should not have named names. That was tacky . All he had to do was make a general statement without getting his panties in a wad over it

Mr. Shaiman? I think I did a pretty good job of supporting my assertion that LaChiusa's comments can be taken as neutral observations as opposed to direct insults (not that they should be taken as such, mind you, that was not the challenge; i asserted that they can).

Sorry to bump, I just caught up. Guess the discussion's over for now...
shortydudette, you absolutely made your point, and I'll buy you that burger anytime if Marc doesn't. :) As I discovered early in the thread, when he can't win an argument, he'll drop it and change the subject (perhaps posting something else cool to distract us!) It's too bad he won't "condescend" to have a real conversation about this - not that I blame him.
And thank you Mr. S, because this:
"... my good friend [PianoDan] ..." - Marc Shaiman
... is going on my resume! Heh.

"pianodan"

HUH? If anything, the last week shows I don't even know HOW to back down from a "fight"!
I (and I think everyone) just thinks the whole discussion has gone in circles enough, and it's clear that you and the person posting as "shortydudette" will never concede that his words were rude and PERSONALLY and PROFESIONALLY insulting. I am not saying you need to give up loving his work, I am glad that you do, but I can't say anything more than the mouthful I have about his piece. Aren't you bored by now? I am!
But I would heartily suggest you two contact Bill Clinton for writing gigs for future speaking engagements of his where he defines sex!

To quote the greatest musical theatre composer of all time:
"Move on."
"Move on."

Hey! I was never asked to make a concession. I was asked, in fact, to support my point. And tempted with beef, no less. And now I'm being chastised for doing what I was encouraged to do? That is terribly misleading.
Anyway, I'm not bored. And it's not nice to just end a discussion like that, it's very dismissive.
It's clear Mr. Shaiman will never concede that what he perceived as wildly insulting could have been just that: perception. That doesn't mean the discussion is over.

All's I gots' ta' say is Sunday night I had the pleasure to hear the AMAZING Annie Golden sing a most wonderful arrangement of "Good Morning Baltimore/I Can Hear the Bells" from HAIRSPRAY at Joe's Pub.
Believe me,that marriage of singer and song would of rivaled much of what is being presented at the Met.
It was truly glorious, she's got a voice from the heavens(she also sang a thrilling "Suddenly Seymour")!!
AMAZING!

How do y'all think they have both grown as artists in the last 10 years?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Grown in the last ten years? That's a rather morbid supposition considering that the musical has been apparently dead for a decade now. I imagine that it's coffin is full of hair and fingernails and show tune manuscripts that it just can't stop churning out from the other side.

I think Marc is still immature and Michael John still has superiority issues. Not much has changed.

Maybe I've missed something, but when has Shaiman been immature in the past? I haven't heard much from him in ages.

Wow. What a trip down memory lane. Eddie Varley, Robbiej's punk look, the late, great Margo Channing...
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.”

Ah yes.. Margo Channing was one of a kind. Miss M.C.!
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

I haven't checked out these boards in years. What a fun, crazy conversation this was. I still think Hairspray is a great musical, but that much of LaChiusa's article was on point. Saddened to learn about Margo, who dispensed thoughtful comments and was friendly in 1-on-1 messages.

Personally, I think they're both great composers. Polar opposites as far as writing styles go but still great.
