110 in the Shade -- restore File's Inside My Head, Lizzie and File's musical scene Too Many People Alone, and add in Lizzie's Sweet River. Use  Starbuck's Evening Star and opening pitch at the top of the show. Perhaps he begins Another Hot Day, Lizzie's picks it up on the train, then  File,  HC, Jimmy and Noah.  It is a gorgeous musical score.

Rags is another beautiful musical score worthy of Encores..

Darling of the Day also has a clever musical score with wonderful Harburg lyrics.

Vernon Duke's Zenda which closed on the road has a good score worthy of restoration.

So many great shows on people's lists - a feast of musical theatre!

The problem is that it is boring.  I don’t think the music is good enough.

Is it too soon for Encores to do The Scottsboro Boys?

I know it's not the same but J2 Spotlight is doing Drat the Cat in their upcoming season off Broadway if you just wanted to see it

Some post-1980 musicals not mentioned but worth reviving: Galt MacDermot's THE HUMAN COMEDY (Jack Viertel always talked about Encores doing this), Larry Grossman's GRIND, Legrand's AMOUR (yes, it's French, but so was the not-so-good IRMA LA DOUCE), and Hamlisch and Ashman's SMILE.   I saw the original productions of the first three, caught the fourth at Mel Miller's Musicals Tonight, and liked them very much.

If Encores did the top tier stage debut of the revised and licensed Smile, which has never had a major showing, that would be huge.

That's quite a list -- which one of those would play "Horse"?! And nothing says "working class" like Timothée Chalamet...

Fwiw, Encores did Zorba in 2015.

I enthusiastically endorse this idea. Encores could do full justice to the gorgeous score, and on paper it should be pretty inexpensive (modest orchestra, small cast, not much scenery needed). It would also probably be our best chance to finally get a second English-language recording.

The book is rough and clunky as all heck but god I really love a lot of the score to The Pirate Queen. Would be first in line for tickets if they ever were to do that.

I was thinking about The Pirate Queen as well, but I wasn’t sure if it was considered an ‘ American’ musical.

Well, Encores has done non-American musicals before such as Me and My Girl and Oliver!.

Maybe some musicals that never made it to New York, like Colette, Whistle Down the Wind, or Tales of the City.

Well, if that’s the case, I’d love to see them take a stab at Martin Guerre!

There were articles about a Martin Guerre revival for 2024 but nothing came of it.

The first one to come to mind for me is Bat Boy. Could you imagine the cast they could pull together for an Encores-length run of that show?

Have you ever seen Martin Guerre?  I saw it in DC and it was a punishment to sit through it.  Went with a bunch of people when I was living in VA, and we still talk about how agonizing it was to sit through 25 years later, when we get together a couple of times a year.

Can’t say I’ve ever seen it, but I have listened to the album and I’d like to think there’s a workable show somewhere in there.

I saw the Goodman Theatre production long ago.  While it had some moments that lagged, it also had some glorious musical numbers. And I've watched the many YouTube videos featuring the music and find some of it thrilling.

The Goodman's MARTIN GUERRE was not the one written by Schonberg and Boubil.

Two musicals mentioned that I would never want to see again: BIG and THE GRAND TOUR.  While each had a good tune or two, their original productions, for me, were excruciatingly bad.  After it died on Broadway, BIG was extensively re-written for licensing.  The interminable GRAND TOUR has an unbelievably stupid ending, totally different from its source material.  Even Jerry Herman admitted GRAND TOUR was a mistake.
