..."but that's all scripted. so you're talking about Ivy, not directly about Hilty....
Oh, absolutely. Didn't mean to imply otherwise or to blame any of the actors.
I just can't get involved enough to remember any of the character's names, so I end up referring to them by the actors' names.
Not fair to Miss Hilty in this case. Thank you for correcting me.
For season 2, I hope they can poach a couple of writers from "Mad Men."

I finally got caught up on the episodes and it is rather fun to watch. But the personalities of these characters change so quickly and without warning, I often feel like there were entire episodes missing. I'll keep watching as long as Wesley Taylor is on the show. I'm a sucker for dimples.
Which one is Wesley? I agree with you . They are not being faithful to the characters they are drawing. But I enjoy watching it.
Wesley is the white gay chorus boy friend. He was in Rock of Ages and Addams Family on Broadway. I think he's a doll.
If you like Jack Davenport get the BBC's This Life. I think there were two series..it has one of the all time great series endings.
Don't bother with the one off episode which came quite a few years later.
Wesley kinda drives me crazy (and not in a good way) on Smash, but he hasn't done much except camped it up to Adele--but I thought he was a highlight as Mouse in Tales of the City in San Francisco, so will cut him some slack.

I do and I will. Thanks.
I just love the way Wesley blurted out, "Sing something!" to Bernadette Peters in the show Monday night.

Here's a little more info as to why they renewed it for a 2nd season:
"Smash" is NBC's top drama in viewers in the 18-49 demographic most important to advertisers. It is also a favorite of NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt.
"Smash," which follows two aspiring stars as they try to make it big in a musical about Marilyn Monroe, is up 160 percent in the demo in the 10 p.m. Monday timeslot. It earned a 2.6 compared to the previous 1.0.
The series, which counts Steven Spielberg among its executive producers, has also doubled viewership in the timeslot from 3.9 million to 7.7 million.

Good news. It really needs a new show runner.
Mister Matt, as far as I know Wes will be on for the remainder of this season.

Damn! NBC is so desperate it's taking orders from this message board!
"I just love the way Wesley blurted out, "Sing something!" to Bernadette Peters in the show Monday night."
Yea, because folks in a rehearsal always do that... lol
It was one of the most cringe-worthy moments this last week.
This Life is one of my top five tv shows ever--some call it too much of a soap but it was a revelation to me as a teen when it aired here in Canada. Avoid the reuinion TV movie like the plague. Actually Davenport kinda plays the same role if he had grown up to be a director/choreographer (I've yet to see his Smash character even mark a bit of a dance step though). I don't think it's on DVD in Region 1 but it can easily be found online--I think it's all on youtube even.
And I'm so flattered that NBC listened to me I wonder though who they will hire instead--or if they'll upgrade a current writer like David Marshall Grant.
I haven't seen This Life in ages! I loved that show. Jack Davenport AND Andrew Lincoln.
*SWOON*
Looks like Rebeck is leaving the show. Maybe with a different writer the characters won't be written to be so unlikable, and there won't be any loose ends left loose. Wishful Thinking, I suppose. :P
Apparently Rebeck wrote the first three episodes of this season...critics said that the show "finds its foot after starting from episode 4."
So it really was a good idea to replace Rebeck. Hopefully the new showrunner will be able tone down the ridiculous soap opera storylines on this show.

Getting a new showrunner is the best possible move they could have made with this show - the acting and songwriting and production values are all there; it's the regular writing that keeps falling down on the job. I hope they hire someone good; Smash has a ton of potential it's not fulfilling.
@Plum---AGREED. I find that when I get annoyed with the show, it is either due to their over soapy storylines or cringeworthy dialogue.
There is no weak actor in the cast, and I absolutely love all of the original songs.

I am sorry, do you just not pay attention to the son then?
I don't count the son as part of the "main cast" of the series. He is at the least a guest star as he has only appeared in a few and not all of the episodes. By the cast I simply mean Karen, Ivy, Derek, Tom, Julie, Eileen and Ellis.

Yeah, send the kid to college next season. His monologue about wanting a baby sister was just execrable, probably the worst scene in the show's run next to Michael and Julia's assignation on the rehearsal room couch. (Eugh.) Poor Debra Messing is just getting hit with all the worst storylines.
"I haven't seen This Life in ages! I loved that show. Jack Davenport AND Andrew Lincoln. "
Andrew Lincoln's full frontal nude scenes got me through a few lonely teenaged night, and of course I identified with Warren's coming out. It was too bad the actor had signed on to do other things before the second season was announced and many hated the ending of the show--which I felt suited the sorta "cinema verite" soap the show was (and the reunion did nothing to help) but...
