NO TONY HOST???

I'm in favor of dumping the host - this year at least. Unless Julia Roberts or Oprah had agreed to host, there isn't much of a name out there who would have been appropriate and who would have actually increased viewership. Hell, Hugh Jackman's numbers last year were in the toilet.
Cutting out the host's monologue and bits of banter will allow more time for performances and the actual awards which are already kept to a sadly constrained time slot.

I've NEVER been a fan of awards show hosts. Bad opening numbers (and yes I'm including Hugh), lame jokes, endless boring speeches. All hosts do is take time away from the musical numbers (which is the only reason most people tune in anyway) and the winners. I'm always sitting at home yelling at the screen "Get off the stage! Stop trying to get Sarah Jessica Parker to dance with you! Could we PLEASE get on with this already overlong three hour dirge!?!?!"
So, thank you Liz McCann. 60 celebrities is MORE than enough. Now if you could just be sure to cut down on the annoying banter between the presenters, I may actually enjoy this year.

I suppose we'll see. 1999 was the year they did it like this last and, uhm... it was pretty damn disjointed, in my memory. But who knows? Maybe the 60 stars gimmic will work. *shrugs*
As for an opening number- That's not dependant on the host, really. They did it last year without Jackman, (I don't count his weird "I Won't Dance" montage as the opening)... in '99 it was a montage of the various presenters singing (granted, not a GOOD montage). I think when Rosie was hosting and the aforementioned 2004 "One Night Only" are the only times that the opening HAS been host-dependent.

So do you guys think if there is no opening number this year, it will give more time for the musical performances?
I hope!

Posted: 5/23/06 at 11:13pmI think they're going to have to do SOME kind of opening number. I actually didn't mind the montage-ey thing last year with about 20 seconds from each of the Best Musical Nominees. They blended them together in a fairly cute way.

Posted: 5/23/06 at 11:24pmWas it last year when they showed clips from all the flops on Broadway with Bernadette singing? They would have plenty of footage if they were to try that this year again, not saying that I want them to.

Posted: 5/23/06 at 11:57pmI think this could be good, at least if it helps pace the show better. Now if we can just kill the bad jokes when the presenters arrive on stage.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 1:12amWhy was the last time the Tony's didn't have a host such a disaster? Are you talking about a ratings disaster or was the show itself just a mess? If it was the show, why was it such a mess? I couldn't have just been due to the lack of a host. The Golden Globes gets on w/o a host just fine.

This certainly surprised me, but I'm not going to judge sompletely until I see it. I generally like a host, but only when they're good, and I don't see toooooo much of them. I agree with Margo though, that by the end of the night I can get tired of them.
I not concerned about the opening number, I think It'll be fine without a host.. it might be better to have a bunch of surprise performances, with all those talented presenters around.
But I wonder who's going to close the show; who get's to say 'thank you for watching' & all that jazz?
(maybe it's not that important, but these are the things I think of at 1:30 AM)

Gosh, who IS going to say "Goodnight and thanks for watching!" I never thought of that. Yes, you are right there MUST be a host.
How about that Angel guy from In My Life...what's his name?

Hmm... I'm starting to see a trend that I don't like...
First the Pulitzer: Lots of amazing plays and then they decide not to give it out to anyone.
The Replacement Tony: Jonathan Pryce, Harvey Fierstein, Eileen Atkins, and the committee messes up and decides not to give it out this year.
Tony Awards Host: Ask Oprah and she turns it down, then they wait, wait, wait... No host yet and they say they'll announce one soon... still waiting... Tony nominations come out and still no host... looks like they decide not to use a host this year and just use numerous presenters instead.
BORING!!!!!!

Posted: 5/24/06 at 1:36amI agree! (Sorry if this is threadjacking) With this new category I was very anxious to see what they would do with it. Now I'm glad that they're not just throwing them around, but if it's just been approved why not use it?

David Turner? What's he up to these days?
What about Suzanne Summers?

I'm a big fan of this. I agree with everything Margo and Sueleen said - among others.
Leen: Turner just replaced Summers in the North Korean tour of THE BLONDE IN THE THUNDERBIRD. He's supposed to be funny.

Posted: 5/24/06 at 11:13amI am excited and can't wait to be there. I like this idea. Hugh was fun for a minute, but I am not a big fan of his singing voice. I do hope this idea allows for more musical numbers. Just not Mary J. Blige (And I LOVE Mary J!) singing "What I Did for Love!

Wow, 60 celebrities is alot! I hope it works. Maybe they can get the show down to 2 hours!!! Opening acts, monologes, guest singers (who usually try to sing show tunes & can't)is a waste of time. Get to the awards....I felt bad last year when "Spamalot" was rushed off the stage at the end!!
In fact last year, Hugh Jackman hardly introduced any of the presenters, if I remember. I think they said he was rehearsing that absolutely horrible duet with Aretha Franklin. What an embarrassment that was!!
Anyway, I'm looking forward to the show.
