I've never seen Grand Hotel, not even the film, so I don't know this story. If I'm not in the mood these days to see a tale of wealth and grandeur, could I still enjoy seeing this show?

The real question to my mind is whether City Center will present the show as written, without an intermission. To my knowledge, Encores! proper has never done a show in one-act. (Off-Center has had a few 80- to 90-minute shows with no break, such as Tick Tick Boom and Assassins).
But Grand Hotel is a unique problem in that a) it's definitely a full two hours, b) there's no logical place for an intermission, and c) as far as I know there's not only no provision in the script to add one, but in fact it has never been presented with one. That said, two hours unbroken seems like a long sit for some of their subscription demographic, and I imagine would be surprising to many who've been seeing their concert musicals presented in 2 acts for a full 25 years now.
Frank Rich in his original review said "The musical at the Martin Beck Theater is an uninterrupted two hours of continuous movement, all dedicated to creating the tumultuous atmosphere of the setting"...
Here's hoping they preserve that and let the show play out in one full swoop. (and let their ticketholders know well in advance so some of them can plan their beverage intake at dinner accordingly).

I really wouldn't expect a recording. Most of the recent ones have been either totally unrecorded (MR ROSEWATER) or shows that had heavily truncated recordings done in the Mono era (GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, PAINT YOUR WAGON, PIPE DREAM) and in a few cases were made to preserve "new" versions of the shows (MERRILY and the new reconstruction of LADY BE GOOD). And even a few that would be in these categories didn't get a record released like CABIN IN THE SKY and THE NEW YORKERS. This show has an excellent recording of pretty much the entire score in stereo with the original cast (minus David Carroll).
And as for intermission, I cannot imagine them adding one. But producers have seen fit to shoehorn in one for FOLLIES for decades so who knows.

Playbill has released two full rehearsal numbers! Brandon Uranowitz's At the Grand Hotel and Heléne Yorke's I Want to Go to Hollywood. They both suit their roles so well. Of course, Uranowitz is stunning, and offers a gorgeous performance, but I am always so consistently surprised by the work of Yorke. She can play such big, broad characters like Evelyn, Marty, and Olive, and then she can go and give such a nuanced take here, and make your heart break when she gets into the breakdown about how sad her life is. I don't know, I'm just amazed. I know this won't happen, but I'd adore for Roundabout or some other non-for-profit to pick this up and revive it on Broadway with this cast for a limited run.
I can't wait to hear reports once the show opens.

I was at the Dress last night, and there was no intermission. Straight through, it ran about 1 hr 45.

The show looks pretty good in the video. But at the end of the Death Bolero you can hear someone yell something. Can anyone make out what it is?

At the very least, I'm curious about the dancing -- considering the Tommy Tune choreo seemed to be the biggest appeal of the original, I wonder how Encores will be presenting it.

Was at the dress rehearsal last night. Is it taboo to say anything about it on here? I was right near the person who yelled at the end of the death dance. They were cheering loudly for all the dancers last night so I assumed they were friends of some kind?

I enjoyed it. I had no familiarity with the musical save for "We'll Take A Glass Together," so I can't speak to how it compares to the original production or other versions.

From the posted video it is very clear that Tommy Tune's original choreography was at least inspiration for what I'm seeing. But of course Tommy was better because it was tighter and more focused.

For me, the original Grand Hotel is right up there on my greatest nights at the theater... A masterpiece, as written? No. It's a good, if not great, show. But, between that legendary Tune staging, the music, the lighting, the look, the performances from some great pros... It was definitely a whole that was far, far greater than the sum of its parts. It's a show I kinda of liked but majorly loved.
From the opening strains of that prologue... with the revolving door pushed downstage... to the glowing, twirling chandeliers and triumphant music/dance of the bows (capped with that lighted "hotel" curtain...) Oh, that's magic...
I'm a few states away, but am forcing my NYU daughter the few blocks over to City Center for the family, if anything, promising she will adore it - though hard to equal the magic of the original, no matter how good.
Now all I am thinking about is Grand Hotel!
(A shame that videos of the original London production (tried for a bit without an interval I recall.. due to the importance of interval drinks there), the US tour, and a few Broadway casts don't exist down in my basement.. or I could simply go down and grab them and watch tonight... Hmmm...)
