There are five new plays, competing for four slots:
Democracy
Gem of the Ocean
Doubt
Brooklyn Boy
The Pillowman
Democracy, Doubt and The Pillowman will all surely be nominated for Best Play. As both Gem of the Ocean and Brooklyn Boy will be closed, they'll duke it out for the fourth slot, but I think Gem will probably make it, much as I admire Brooklyn Boy too.
There's a ridiculous amount of play revivals competing for four slots for Best Revival of a Play.
Sight Unseen
After the Fall
Reckless
Twelve Angry Men
'Night Mother
The Rivals
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
The Glass Menagerie
Glengarry Glen Ross
A Streetcar Named Desire
On Golden Pond
Steel Magnolias
Julius Caesar
Twelve Angry Men is a lock for a nomination, and I think Julius Caesar, because it's a box office success, is probably going to be nominated as well. Virginia Woolf, Glengarry and Streetcar are probably the leading contenders for two of the remaining slots, although I couldn't say which two will make the cut.

the revivals of a play are crazy this year. out of control. but i saw on golden pond in dc and james earl jones is magnificent. the set design too will surely get some reward, if only a nomination. i think linda powell was fabulous as chelsea too. so we'll see. but twelve angry men is basically a lock.
People've told me that Twelve Angry Men was EXCELLENT...and that review came from people who HATE broadway *shudder to think of people like that*
I think they'll feel like they are taking care of On Golden Pond by nominating James Earl Jones. It's not a play that critics love and there are higher powered, better plays in the running for Best Revival, but I'm sure they'll throw laurels at him.
Twelve Angry Men IS excellent, although it's the only play revival i've seen this season so far...

well he deserves it. but i don't know if the whole production does. really though, what a strong year for theatre, even if the plays are mostly revivals... i mean 13 revivals and 5 new. wow...
and then 10 new musicals and 3 musical revivals. this is craziness!

My guess is that for revivals, the nominees will be Julius Caesar (by all accounts and from what I saw at the first preview, it's a very strong production that will only get stronger as previews continue), Streetcar (likely the strongest, most skilled cast in any play or revival this season no matter what anyone says about Reilly not being right for Stanley, Roundabout word is he's fantastic in rehearsals), Twelve Angry Men (commercial success) and as my wild card, Sight Unseen. Donald Margulies is the only living playwright to have two plays on Broadway this season and while I don't think Brooklyn Boy will nab that fourth slot for Best Play (it should absolutely go to Gem), I think he (or that accomplishment) might be acknowledged in that best revival category. Foster is a long shot.
Victoria Clark has a firm grasp on Best Actress.
And I really hope that Phillip Bosco gets a Best Actor in a Play nomination for Twelve Angry Men, despite his premature departure to go into CCBB.

I LOVED Sherie in DRS, but I doubt that she'll get nominated in the Best Actress category--no matter how much she deserves it. She'll probably get Featured.
And I REALLY hope that Brooklyn gets nominated for as few things as possible. Ugh.
Though I think, without even having opened, I'll go with Victoria Clark, I wouldn't rule out a major groundswell for Charlotte D'Amboise, now that she's saving the day.
If Erin Dilly is even halfway decent, I think she'll knock Eden off that list.
Don't forget Celia Keenan-Bolger and Kelly O'Hara.
Brooklyn will NOT get a nomination. I'll faint if it does, out of shock. Sutton has a strike against her, having won just a few years earlier.
Will Christian Slater be considered Leading or Supporting?

Probably Lead since he's above the title and a movie star (ironically, Roberts was billed below the title and probably would have been Featured for the same role).
Yeah, I noticed that, although I would think he'd have a better chance being nominated if he were considered Supporting.

You're right. The producers should petition to have him considered Featured once the show opens. Not sure if it'll work, but they should try.
The Leading Actor category is cluttered this year, and from what I've heard, he isn't really up to snuff yet. If they want him nominated, they should lobby to have him considered Featured.
Wow, bjivie2, those look really accurate.
Don't forget Natasha Richardson for Best Actress in a Play and Bill Irwin and John C. Reilly for Best Actor in a Play.
I think Actress will go to Phylicia Rashad (she was fantastic) and Actor might be Bill Irwin, although reviews for the other actors haven't come out yet.

Why would Tim Curry be considered Featured Actor?
I would love to see Sherie win for her role, whether it is in leading or feature she is just so talented. I know know if she *should* based on the others in the categories (haven't seen some of the others yet), but that girl has talent.

tom in the glass menagerie being considered as featured. no. i'm sorry. that part is leading no matter who plays it.
I've always considered Amanda the only leading role in "The Glass Menagerie."

no. i consider them both leading and laura and jim are featured. tom is hardcore the lead. i mean. wow, i'm having a hard time even comprehending a thought of him not being considered a lead.
Twelve Angry Men should win Play Revival (at least I hope)
