""Free speech!""
You obviously don't totally understand the meaning of "free speech". Kimmel has the freedom to say anything he wants to say. As an employee of Disney, they have the freedom to fire him for saying something they believe does not reflect very well for their business. I am quite sure there is a code of conduct, and he did not follow it. In other words, your words have consequences. Both sides of the political spectrum have had people fired for things they said that their employer found objectionable. Kimmel is a millionaire, he will survive. I feel sorry for other people on the show who have now lost their job.

New York Times reporting (gift link):
"ABC announced on Wednesday evening that it was pulling Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show “indefinitely” after criticism of comments he made on his Monday program about the motives of the man who is accused of fatally shooting the conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week."
Guardian US reporting has more info as it is in the form of live blogging.
And the comments from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr seem likely to be considered by some as crossing the line into government coercion over speech.
And this Jake Tapper reporting via X thread about the FCC and media acquisitions and licensure adds yet another dimension to what is unfolding.
Messiness all around.
It's perfectly okay for FoxNews to exist, though, FCC? Make it make sense!

But Disney is firing him because the government pressured them to do so .... And I'm quite sure their code of conduct doesn't say you can't call a murderer MAGA. But this just shows that conservatives have never had a problem with cancel culture.

not the government, but the orange guy in the White House. Now he also wants Fallon & Seth Meyers cancelled, too. Full-on authoritarian dictatorship underway.
Conservatives have spent the last twenty-five years going insane and now they have a death grip on the steering wheel and both feet on the gas. Absolutely indefensible.

Are you kidding me? You really think Disney is going to bow to the government especially with Trump as POTUS. Please tell me what the government is going to do to Disney if they did not get rid of Kimmel's show. Disney is about family entertainment and the last thing they want is their late-night host offending 50% of the country. MAGA goes to Disneyland/Disneyworld and spends money just like liberals. I am sure they spend tons of money on merchandise also. It is just not liberals who subscribe to Disney+. In the words of Michael Jordan many years ago, Republicans buy Nike sneakers also. I am sure Disney HR department is quite good. Code of conduct is probably written that saying anything that reflects badly on the company is grounds for dismissal.

Which FOX News host? The host still has job because FOX for some incredible reason does not find this as offensive. No way to defend it.

"What seemed possible — but hard to believe — before President Trump took office once more has now taken shape: A number of corporate and individual owners of media that promise to hold power to account have instead bowed to it. So too have the chiefs of two major social media platforms — among the richest people on the planet."

Also:
"Carr’s comments (FCC Chairman) were enough to convince some broadcast groups that own large numbers of ABC affiliates to complain to the network, and some threatened to pre-empt Kimmel’s programming and replace it with extended local news broadcasts or repeats of syndicated programming, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
By Wednesday evening, two of the largest broadcasters — Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair, Inc. — announced their intentions to pre-empt Kimmel’s show on their local ABC affiliates."

They already have
Please tell me what the government is going to do to Disney if they did not get rid of Kimmel's show
Trump's FCC Commissioner was on TV just a day or so ago talking about it:
Disney is about family entertainment and the last thing they want is their late-night host offending 50% of the country. MAGA goes to Disneyland/Disneyworld and spends money just like liberals.
MAGA ain't 50% of the country. But it's curious how this rule only works one way. Republicans are never asked to make overtures towards Democrats.

Yes, it's because of Trump that this is happening. Have you not read his latest utterings where he takes credit for Kimmel's dismissal? But as you said, free speech has consequences. Sometimes it's the loss of a TV show, other times the loss is much greater.

All this to get attention off Epstein files. People shouldn't forget and remind every single day.
I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow, but it's incorrect to say Kimmel's show has been canceled or the suspension is permanent. For example, I have a ticket to see Kimmel tape his show in Brooklyn next month. That taping hasn't been canceled yet.

Yes - but we must respond with urgency. I've cancelled Hulu and stated the reason - I urge others to. Free Speech. Free Kimmel. We cannot be passive here. Authoritarian roots are spreading under our feet.

You have your head in the sand, my friend. Last year you insisted that Trump had nothing to do with Project 2025. The author of Project 2025 has a prominent role in the administration and is responsible for much of this administrations policy. I don't say this to rehash, just to point out that you may have blindspots.
Trump said months ago he wanted Kimmel gone, and this was the pretext.

Let’s make sure everyone understands the facts with Kimmel.
As the right is trying to paint this as “at-will” termination.
-Nextar the parent company of Kimmel’s show is seeking FCC approval for a merger.
-Kimmel made comments about Trump on Monday night (months after Trump openly said he wanted to get Kimmel fired next)
-Reporting is that Trump had the FCC lean on Nextar over these comments.
-Apparently they expressly used the line “we can do this the easy way, or the hard way”
-Multiple executives at the network have on background said they “had no issue with Kimmel’s statements but the Trump threat loomed” referring to the merger.
This was *NOT* a network dissatisfied with Kimmel.
This was *NOT* a network embarrassed or horrified by what Kimmel said.
This was *NOT* a network that thought he was unfunny, or underperforming.
This was *NOT* a company freely choosing to fire an employee.
This was expressly the federal government weaponizing federal departments, in retribution for someone being critical of the President.
This is LITERALLY what the 1st Amendment exists for.
It does not protect you from private actions by private entities.
It protects you from actions by the government to censor your speech.
Whether brazen and direct, or through coercion and threat.
This is not about if Kimmel was offensive or not.
This is about speech
