Adding my two cents/observations here. Nothing I say is an attack on Deaf West or the work they do. I agree that this production of Spring Awakening was interesting and needed and a Tony performance will expand the reach of the production.
However: the deceptive language and backhanded business tactics used to repay commercial producers under the guise of supporting Deaf West is despicable. Relying on the donations of fans to "fund" a performance when 1) the performance is already bought and paid for, 2) this possibility should have been including in the closing deal, and 3) the purported costs of the performance are nearly HALF the typical annual expenses of Deaf West.
Nowhere does the Kickstarter mention the commercial producers, despite the url for the campaign, GetSpringOnTheTonys.com being registered to Davenport Theatricals. At no time has the Tony Awards, Deaf West, or Davenport commented on the relationship between the two. And no one involved is admitting to the truth: the cast of Spring Awakening WILL perform on the broadcast no matter the outcome of the Kickstarter, as the performance has been slotted, paid for and more than likely already in rehearsal.
