Based on tonight's notices, I'd have to think Parker and John Lee Beatty have made their cases for Tony noms, if not wins, for Leading Actress and Set Design of a Play.

Definitely –– Mary Louise, that is.

That's a lot of "Parker's great, but not much else". Wonder if the positive reviews mean she'll come back to the stage soon. Alone.
The second act was hoary and dated in 1970, when I saw the bus and truck (Betty Garrett, Larry Parks). It felt like a sitcom, and though I was a teenager, I remember discussing it thus. The first act was the substantive one, a preview of the darker work Simon would get to in Gingerbread Lady. I liked it best then, and still do. The reviews noting the sexism elsewhere aren't harsh or unfair, they're just accurately explaining that not everything can be revisited comfortably. It's much harder to giggle at women being so clueless in circumstances we now understand as compromising. But I agree with those who say the reviews are irrelevant. This is for the stars, and the stars -- surprisingly, seldom on stage together -- are an old school Broadway event.
It's interesting that many folks are saying that the pairing of SJP and Matthew is the event, yet many of the reviews talk about how inert Broderick is. I've never experienced him as winning on stage. I think his successful stint in The Producers was an anamoly and played on his defaults. Also, as he has aged, I feel he has become less dynamic in many ways.
It would have been nice if they picked something fresher to do, but I understand that Simon is old school New York.
Reviews will never matter for this show. Sarah Jessica looked gorgeous!
She's also damned good in the right part. Revisit The Family Stone, in which she plays the most unsympathetic character in the starry ensemble, who famously insults both the LGBTQ+ and the deaf in one dinner sequence, the best scene in the movie. The character is a bull in a china shop, unable to hold her tongue or self-edit, and Parker is fearless, refusing to ask the audience to like her. In a film that gets squishy and sentimental by the end, she shines throughout, making a difficult and entirely recognizable young woman entirely real and human. I still point to the performance as an indicator that her best work may be ahead of her. I'm not surprised that many find her effective here, even those who say she's miscast.

I’m certain that SJP has the bigger following for sure, but the event IS the couple themselves performing with each other in the NY stage.
Could they have chosen a better play to perform in, sure. But it doesn’t matter what the play was, they wanted to do a Simon play and share the stage together. I believe that the audiences are eating this up and could care less about the play. The attraction to buy a ticket was because of the pairing.
Broderick out tonight due to a positive Covid test - SJP still in. Who is his cover?

His Nice Work If You Can Get It castmate, Michael McGrath
Would his absence warrant a ticket holder an exchange for a future date? I feel bad for him of course but also for audience members who didn’t take refunds for the past 2 years in order to see him & SJP perform together. Feel better, Matthew!!
I don't feel bad for the audience, they actually get to see an actor in the part who acts. Michael McGrath will knock this out of the park.

Getting a ticket for tomorrow. NOW I can see this show.
Michael was fantastic! We were initially bummed that Matthew was out but WOW Michael delivered! I was impressed by SJP too - the third act was pure hilarity with these two!

I’d say there’s a high chance that if he’s got it, SJP will test positive also and then that’s the show cancelled for a week."
A chance, sure. But by no means a certainty, or even a high chance. I live with my mother, and when I got Covid back in December (part of the NYC theatre outbreak), she never did. And she tested regularly.
Worth noting that we were both vaccinated + boosted, and I wore a KN95 mask when I left my room.
Is anyone selling their tickets this week because Broderick is out?
PM me! I'm looking to buy!
Broderick also proved successful in "It's Only A Play" again with Nathan Lane. Apparently he only is a sell-out with a duo.
McGrath is an insane actor who is great at comedy. I'd rush to get a ticket to see him and SJP together.
It's wonderful that the show went on with his cover. I read elsewhere that some people figured they're joined at the hip*, in this revival packaged around married stars, and must perform together. I'm impressed, and suspect it was an exciting night indeed.
*back in the day, pre-internet buzz, when Emily Skinner was out of Side Show, many assumed the two understudies for the twins would appear. Interviews suggested the performance was truly a united pair whose timing was carefully rehearsed. But I saw a Saturday evening with Ripley went on with the gifted Lauren Kennedy. Quite an exciting night. If anyone remembers the intricate choreography ("We Share Everything" ), no small feat. Ah, memories.

I have tickets for tonight's show - fingers crossed SJP remains healthy!
Matthew was on Seth Myers last night, don't they film that on the same day?

They typically do. I’m actually watching it now (on dvr). I’m surprised Late night shows don’t test guests? I suppose he could be negative a few hours prior to testing positive (twice) but I don’t know protocol and it couldn’t have been more than 2-4 hours before the theater tested him.
Seth had covid at the start of the December wave - likely omicron - so hopefully he’ll be ok. If he does get it this doesn’t bode well for reinfection odds.
