Geeze, I thought Samantha Barks was supposed to be good? Not according to these notices.
The Telegraph is also a fan. UK critics to the rescue I guess:

God, only a clueless man would EVER say that. It. Matters."
Tell that to Jerry Mitchell and his crew. Not me. Clueless. HA!
Here’s a link to Playbill’s website with links to all the reviews. I haven’t read them all yet, but these are much worse, excepting the UK critics, than the Mean Girls reviews, right?

From what I’ve heard about Pretty Woman, Mean Girls is far superior. A fun score, great book and phenomenal cast. Don’t understand the dislike for it as it is a great adaption. Keeps things you love from the movie, but expands on the story and characters. This seems to do the opposite.
I’m apparently less mature than I thought because I giggled for longer than I should have at the “summer of ‘69” pun in the Guardian review.

I also enjoyed the “have you ever really bought a woman” pun. I can’t recall which review it was in.

After seeing the show in Chicago, I thought it was mediocre at best which seems to be the critical consensus. The show, I believe, is NOT critic proof. Word of mouth will not be very strong and coupled with these horrible reviews I doubt the show will run a year

Interesting to hear your thoughts! Orfeh was recently on Show People and she mentioned how many women are coming to the show and I figured they could survive off of that market (girlfriends, moms and daughters, etc.) But maybe you're right! I guess we'll find out.
You can cut the disappointment with the adaptation with a knife. Would another writing team have been able to crack the code? Summer does not seem to be the time to open artistic successes but the perfect time to launch popular hits.

It depends on what the first wave of female attendees says to the second and third waves... I don't think people are lining up tickets months and months in advance.
A Lauper 'Pretty Woman' could have been fun. She's got that 80s pop thing down.
This just sounds so boring, and all the clips I've seen are pretty boring.
In reference to Barks, I think people tend to get swept up with a good belt. She might hit some high notes, but doesn't make her performance a breakthrough.
^ Well it’s not listing at TKTS and it’s percentages are great which would seem to suggest full-price advance ticket sales are solid.

Err, yes, these are the first wavers in my example. They bought based on the property. The question is how long that will continue if they start saying it wasn't that great, or if they like it enough because of their affection for the source material, or if people just don't care and keep going anyway. We shall see...

There isn’t one female on the creative team of GTBBT either
Yes, we’ll see if this is another critic-proof bonanza like Mamma Mia or a more mid-tier possible success like Anastasia or even a mid-tier flop like Bronx Tale (at least I don’t think it recouped?) or a fading property like Summer.
I think it will go the way of Summer. None of the reviews mention anything positive about the aspects that make it a musical. And doesn't seem like Mitchell could add any spark to it. This and GTBBT are dated and take the musical genre back.
I’m honestly a bit relieved that this got such bad reviews. I hated it so deeply and feel a bit reassured by the critics. I will concur with everyone who found Allison Blackwell brilliant, though. Her opera scene soared. Voice of an angel. Of the three musicals that have opened so far, I’m astonished to say that I think Head Over Heels is the best of the bunch because it’s merely very bad but at least isn’t offensive.

Just profane... or really... offensive?
I really liked HOH. It was fun and stupid. But I wish the design had been more interesting. I'd recommend it. But have some drinks first.
Looks like the opera singer got the best review from the NY Times.

Whether the setting is luxurious Beverly Hills or seedy downtown Hollywood, David Rockwell’s set has a kind of “Sesame Street” friendliness, and Kenneth Posner and Phillip S. Rosenberg’s lighting saturates everything in Disney shades of orange and fuchsia. This is true even for the show’s sex (or foreplay) scenes, which find Vivian in a series of cleavage-enhancing bras and slips.
Mostly, Ms. Barks conducts herself like a peppy, tomboyish cutup from a sitcom. She often doesn’t seem entirely at ease, but her discomfort is nothing compared to Mr. Karl’s. This fine musical performer, a knockout in the recent “Groundhog Day,” often looks as if he would rather be anywhere but here, especially when he has to sing internal monologues about how free Vivian makes Edward feel.
