Paddington is heading to New York.
A musical about the anthropomorphic, marmalade-loving bear is opening on Broadway in the spring of 2027. The show’s transfer was teased with posters of Paddington, which have been popping up around the theater district with the phrase “Have you seen this bear?”
“Paddington: The Musical” will play at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre after “Moulin Rouge” wraps up its seven-year run. It will begin performances on March 30 ahead of opening night on April 18.

The Tony opening number this year made the connection first, but I find it quite amusing that the Hirschfeld is going from "Lady Marmalade" to marmalade sandwiches.
And now I shall finally give the cast album a listen.

Pleasantly surprised with the ticket prices for this (at least.. currently, I’m sure they’ll get more expensive).

Curious as to what will play the Hirschfeld in between Moulin Rogue and Paddington. The house certainly won’t sit dark from August to March, right?

There won’t be enough time for anything to actually go in there between the load out of MR in September and the load-in of Paddington in January/Feb. the theater will only really be effectively vacant in the sense there won’t be any work going on in it for a couple months.

Makes sense, Kad. I figured if a small limited run with minimal needs wanted to do a run for the holidays, maybe Mid-October to Jan 3rd, it would be possible. But you’re right, it’s probably too tight and wouldn’t be feasible for anything.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if the theater owners will want to do some maintenance or other work on the venue now that it’ll have a decently lengthy vacancy for the first time in a long while.

Got my tickets! A surprise ticket drop is the way to go. Really happy to see there’s a decent portion of the audience priced at or under $100 before fees.

Yeah I’m sure ATG would like to do some work on it (unless they’re strapped for cash amidst this possible acquisition).
Am I remembering correctly that there are still no orchestra-level bathrooms? I haven’t been in there since before the pandemic. But there’s probably not space to put them downstairs.

Per Paulson:
"[Lead producers Sonia] Friedman and [Eliza] Lumley, speaking in a joint video interview, said they expect to make some tweaks to the show before it arrives on Broadway — fixing things they didn’t get to before the London opening, and removing a few British references that are not likely to resonate with American audiences; overall, though, they believe the story’s Britishness will be an asset and not a liability. 'Anything that will go over an audience’s head we will repurpose, but we’re not going to suddenly be setting it in Brooklyn,' Friedman said."

The 7 months between MR closing and Paddington starting previews looks like the longest period of time the Hirschfeld will have had between productions since 1984 when there was a 9 month gap between a production of All's Well That Ends Well and The Rink (and technically it's the longest gap the Hirschfeld has ever had, as it was the Martin Beck back then).

Good gravy. Now I'm going back to NYC in the New Year. Just shelled out for Evita tickets too. I'm going to have to find some funny hats, practice screaming, & start a tiktok just to pay for it all. Sweaty Bear? Out of Touch Oracle? Random rumor screecher?

A bit unfamiliar with previews, but as this is coming over from London, would there be any major changes between previews and opening??

This is a few posts above yours, seems like some minor changes

I would think that any major tweaks will be made in the time before performances begin - as usual, small changes are likely to occur throughout previews, but the removal of British references that was mentioned as well the fixes that didn’t get to be made for the UK production will be finished by the time the Bway production goes into rehearsal.

First listen through and man, sometimes Oleksinski hits the nail on the head when describing a musical's score. I really do hear a pleasant blend of MATILDA's whimsy and DEAR EVAN HANSEN's anthemic pop ballads. Very hummable and easy on the ears, though with a tad too many slant rhymes for my liking.
The second half opens with a lively waltz in the vein of the Sherman Brothers, an ode to marmalade that I'm sure will sear into a LOT of people's heads. Act two also feels a little too fatty and I thought too much attention is paid to some of the kooky side characters. Then again, I haven't seen this live yet.
"I've Arrived" is a solid opener and I really liked the allusion to Big Ben's chime.
I was getting some "I Will Prevail" vibes from "Pretty Little Dead Things" at first, before it starts to bounce and break loose at each chorus. And the lyrics are A+++. (There's a great nod to the aforementioned MATILDA involving a clever usage of the alphabet!)
"The Rhythm of London" is... a calypso? Lively nonetheless, but I found it a bit odd. Does it make more sense in context? Feels like a 2020s "Under the Sea."
Looking forward to catching this, even if only to surrender to the epic contrapuntal moments in the final minute of each act. I hope as many of the London faces as possible come stateside.

The movie has a calypso band that pops up from time to time.
The song is also probably intended to reflect the backgrounds of the characters who sing it (Tony and his mum).

There's only one orchestra level single stall bathroom, it's by the bar and the line for the women's room, and unless you're directed there by an employee, it's practically hidden away.
