You can use that nice language and say "Speaking Truth to Power" all you want but this is not truth. That is YOUR truth, but it is not THE truth. And we are talking about THE truth. In other words, what is objectively happening not what is going on inside your minds. Just because something is going inside your mind doesn't make it actually true."

No I am not asking you to accept that Patti is racist. I am asking you to understand that her actions were microaggressive because of who they were against. The context of the spilling sound does not matter, because of the phrasing she used and the stereotypes inherent in that phrase of being "TOO LOUD". I'm saying it was unconscious bias, and white privilege which does NOT mean she is racist. You don't have to BE A RACIST to exhibit racist behavior.

It just truly BLOWS MY MIND that there are people still trying to say that everyone disagreeing with how this situation has played out are white. Entirely discredits anything these users are saying. This thread should be shut down. The accusations flying are absolutely out of bounds and false. We're really back to sharing a reading list?

Bottom line: shows have adjusted volume levels long before this instance. It was made into something that it demonstrably isn't. And Patti sent flowers as a thank you knowing that it was a burden to make the adjustments. Case closed. Nothing more to glean from it.

There is a cohort of people in this industry's fandom that will leap onto anything, particularly when it comes to Patti. This is no different. And the people accusing her of being racist are not to be taken seriously.

We wonder why people don't take racism seriously. It's because bs like THIS is crying wolf. It's ridiculous. I'll say it bluntly, the way Kecia approached this is ridiculous. If the roles were reversed and it was Patti's show that was being asked to turn down the volume (which has HAPPENED) and she made a social media video calling someone in a neighboring production anti-woman or anything of that nature, the same people crying foul here would be rooting for her cancellation....again. Deeply unserious.

And to dump metaphorical fuel on a very real fire...

I sat in the front row last night (AA 101) - 1) Kecia Lewis was out of the show [Rema Webb covered and absolutely wrecked me], and 2) the box office and the usher both warned us about extreme sound levels when they saw the seat I was assigned.

Well surely the usher and box office are also racist for telling you this!! SEE HOW RIDICULOUS THIS IS?!

Yep, I hope you told them both that is a racist microaggression and provided them with a reading list.

This yes 100%! Enough of this BS. Btw, HK is LOUD! You can hear how loud the show is in the Booth! Patti handled this professionally.......Kecia Lewis made this non issue racially microagressive! Shame on her.

I think the majority of people understand acts of intentional and overt racism, but when it comes down to ideas like microaggressions and situations like this, you quickly become bogged down and get into the weeds and that is where people get confused or frustrated and ultimately check out. It's much harder to succinctly put forward and, frankly, is often dependent on individual feelings or specific situational circumstances rather than a universality people can quickly understand and apply. If it takes a bibliography of 10 books to fully understand, you've lost most people.

It's also a shame that Audra, LaChanze, Kenny Leon, Maleah Joi Moon, and others have chosen to publicly hitch their wagons to the Kecia runaway train.

Yeah, I don't think anyone is saying that Patti calling the show loud to a random fan was a good move. It was flippant and snarky. But if Kecia was actually interested in Patti understanding why that interaction was interpreted as a microaggression, she would have talked to Patti privately or reached out to The Roommate's team to organize some sort of discussion. You don't create a teaching moment by hurling buzzwords at someone in public, like "microaggression" "privileged" and "bully". Even if you think those descriptors are accurate, it's not how you get someone to listen to the substance of your argument.

Instead, she made a public call-out/cancellation post. The post seems purely designed to make an example of Patti, not build community. Kecia edited video to make the stage door incident look worse than it was. She omitted that The Roommate's backstage team and audience were (allegedly) also impacted by the noise, and that Mia also (allegedly) sent flowers. She demanded a public apology after riling up her fans and friends, all but guaranteeing that any apology would be scrutinized to death and not accepted. She cut off the avenue for a private apology or discussion by showing that she is willing to immediately post about it on social media.

Damn shame, Black people support each other. You right,

Another interpretation of these people "hitching their wagons" to Kecia is that there is a wide consensus that what she said was the truth, that what she said is something that has gone unsaid for too long (or rather, said over and over again and shushed by the "proper" theatergoers in the orchestra) and that there is a collective appreciation from other Black theatermakers and they are showing support because they know that Kecia's frustration speaks to a larger, deeper and consistently disregarded truth in the American theatre: the white artist can say/do/defend whatever they want with impunity because they are more often than not upheld by the cis gay white men who enjoy every other ease when it comes to the great, white way.

Audra is just jealous that Patti got a tony for Gypsy while she is going to lose to Nicole. JOKING.

Anyway, I don’t care about this madness anymore. If a small number of people would rather create war against others because they think objective truth is offensive to them so be it. I’m on the side of truth, and you can scream and cry all you like but if we can’t call a show that is objectively LOUD, LOUD - then I want no part in this religious cult anymore.

Categorically false and untrue, there are many white people I know personally who have learned and made real growth and progress from many of those books. White guilt is okay if used for fueled and put into action to make the world a better place. It would no longer be guilt then but active energy used to DO SOMETHING to make the world more equitable.

This is anecdotal.  There is no hard evidence.

It has become abundantly clear that the majority of people on this board are more interested in POC being quiet, performing for them and being void of any human emotion. It is impossible to engage here because there's no accountability. I hope Ms. Lewis's TV show is a huge success and she never has to return to Broadway because she deserves much better than the racist vitriol that is championed by this pathetic "community."

Genuine question, if Patti said "the volume of the show is too loud" or "the amplification of the show is excessive" would that still be a micro aggression or is it the sharp quick way of saying it's too loud that is the micro aggression?

Ok, let me ask another way then: how can Patti comment on the objective sound levels of Hell's Kitchen without micro aggressing? Your response seems to suggest that it is not possible. It almost sounds like you're saying that Patti isn't even allowed to comment on objective reality in any way without committing racist behaviour. Can't you see how mad that is?

Guess that means that when the HK box office and ushers warn the audience about the volume, it really is a microaggression. Seems like the show has a bigger problem than Lupone then.

The microaggression is COMING FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE!!!

Is it a microaggression when my next door neighbor plays loud music and I walk over and ask them to turn it down? Or should I make a video about it and post it on Instagram next time?
