A great actor and director, but moreover a generous, kind soul.
RIP good sir. You will be missed

aww this is a shame, what a brilliant man who contributed a great amount to the world of Film
RIP
Very very sad. My sympathies to his family and friends.
Fortunately we have all those great movies to remember him by - and I was fortunate enough to see him perform on stage several times, most recently in the 2003 production of OUR TOWN.
One of the classiest guys ever to be a hollywood star!
I am so saddened by this but at least he's not in pain anymore and at peace. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. Rest in peace, Mr. Newman and thank you for leaving us with a legacy of brilliant work.

two of my earliest and most treasured theater experiences were Newman's performance as the killer who takes a family hostage in Desperate Hours, and as Chance Wayne in Sweet Bird of Youth. They were remarkable, beautifully defined. He will be greatly missed.
I met him once at a show that his wife directed. He was so proud of his wife's work. He lit up the room. May he rest in peace. Very sad.
He was from my home state...RIP Paul Newman.
My idol...

He lived 10 minutes away from me and did such great things for the Westport Country Playhouse.
This is sad news. He was such a great man. R.I.P.
Another has passed that was never given an AFI Lifetime achievement award. I guess they did not consider him deserving

brilliance in every thing he did. His versatile acting and his brilliance in many other fields will truly be missed. He showed many it was possible to lead a normal life and is one of the icons of the 20th century. May he rest in piece.

This news brought tears to my eyes----He was indeed a true gentleman, a very generous person who lived & enjoyed life in a dignified manner. R.I.P. Mr. Newman.
I look for TCM to start airing some of his movies (& preempt regular movies) in the next few days.

In my opinion he was the best actor of his generation. He'll be sorely missed
A truly first class individual in every way. Talent, humour, intelligence, passion ; he brought them all to whatever he did. I consider myself privileged to have seen him in "Our Town" in 2003. His influence will be much missed in so many ways, especially his philanthropic and humanitarian work.
The race is run- rest in peace. A truly gracious man.
Sympathy to all his family.

RIP
What a shame, for his family and friends...
A class act!
"Another has passed that was never given an AFI Lifetime achievement award. I guess they did not consider him deserving "
I have a feeling he never got an AFI Lifetime acheivement award because he wouldn't go to accept it. If you remember, he wasn't there to accept his honorary oscar. I believe he did something on film.
I too am so saddened at the loss of such a great actor. I remember going to "The Towering Inferno" (I know not one of his classic films but I LOVED this movie growing up.) and my mother telling me that they first time she saw him, she knew he would be a big star. I saw him in the Our Town revival a few years ago. I'm so glad I did. He will be missed
