Finally watched this... not sure what people expected Walken to do, but he delivered exactly what it seemed he was meant to.
And what exactly was he meant to deliver?

I thought the whole broadcast was "meh". Kelli O'Hara was great in the little on screen time she had. Christopher Walken she be imprisoned for giving one of the most wooden and boring performances I have ever seen and actor give. Overall the whole thing left me cold.

Read lines off cue cards? He was embarrassing. I have seen 16 year olds give better Hook performances. He's an Oscar winner for crap sake and he completely bombed.

Funny.
There are valid criticisms to be made. Many made in this thread.
Unfortunately, no one seems to have any desire to do much more than pile on trash talking everything except "Broadway royalty" and seek out more things to trash talk, even the parts that do not merit trash talking, but just because it is "the thing to do.."

"And what exactly was he meant to deliver?"
A spacey, foppish cad with a lot of awkward pausing and strange line readings, like he's been doing for quite a while now?!
"Read lines off cue cards?"
There were no cue cards, as SNAFU (who was involved with production) said a few posts ago. That is his delivery without reading it.
I'm sorry if anyone is offended that I enjoyed it... heh.

Are they re-airing it ala SOUND OF MUSIC LIVE? As boring as I found it I'd actually love to re-watch it.

There are two types of character actor- the virtuosic, who disappears completely into a role, and the more common "character-actor" (note the hyphen), where the character will always be the actor, but the actor's delivery and style is specific enough that that isn't a problem.
Walken may have begun his career as an actor, and maybe even a virtuosic actor, but discovered his fame and fortune when he embraced the Walken "persona" and has not deviated from it since. It helps also that he is rich as hell, and is basically doing this stuff to amuse himself in his old age.

Alison would make a great Mary Poppins.

Allison as Mary Poppins is an interesting idea.

As she got more into the role she showed some more warmth, she didn't seem like a friend though more so a mother or Nanny type figure.

She'd have been great as Mary Poppins.

If ABC ever catch on to this it could make a good production but they do have the PL Travers fiasco of them not wanting another adaption, the. Again she gave her blessing on the musical so stranger things have happened.

Oh really? I guess people were just being snaky when they said they could tell he was reading from a teleprompter. It really seemed like he was.

Cue cards or not, he was staring at SOMETHING off-camera. Perhaps the wall at the back of the soundstage?

First of all, let's just agree that this was MUCH better than Sound of Music. But NBC, please get a new director! Everything was so flat. The acting, the singing, everything. Luckily Williams was not as flat as Walken. Walken's dancing wasn't too bad for being 71 years old. Sets were awesome. The trees though? What was up with that. I felt like I was tripping on Acid. Hopefully next year will get better! If they improve every year maybe in 10 years it'll be worthy to go to Broadway!

I was on the set during the final week or so of rehearsals there was not room for teleprompters or cue cards with all the freaking cameras everywhere. Mr. Nowack, he was looking at a place, two stars to the left, a place where time in never planned, it's not on any chart, you must find it with your heart, "Christopher Walken Land!"

I didn't realize you were a part of the production. very cool. Was Christopher doing the same thing in rehearsals? The director didn't tell him his acting choices weren't landing?
