Potential Theatres for "Moulin Rouge"

OK...it's looking like the Cort will either be available now or undergoing renovation...almost 1100 seats?  Is the stage area big enough for the set design?

Court is a playhouse and way too small and the Prom is playing there.

No to the Cort.

Just looking at what this show's scenic design is like, I feel like the Hirschfeld is not the right pick. The mezzanine overhang at the Hirschfeld obstructs the view above the proscenium for a large chunk of the orchestra. Just thinking in terms of good sightlines (since we know that the set plays a big role in this show), I'm leaning toward the Marquis as the best fit for this.

I still maintain that the marquis can be a blank canvas, there are no side boxes as such, they can simply create some faux box panels as what we see in the photo is part of the Colonial and not the set. They can also go overboard with the drapery in the roof, paint those ugly boards black (or remove some, last time I was there, Evita, some looked like they were ready for fall out) Plus they have a decent size lobby to decorate.

Renovation and major construction of buildings surrounding the Cort...Hard Rock Hotel is being built across the street.

I like the idea of the Winter Garden. Especially since I recall hearing that it has a very wide stage and the front boxes overlook the stage (I think the Japanese video of Pacific Overtures shows them). Also, that it was a favorite theater for Lee(?) Shubert who presented his Follies shows there for many years. (Truly a spectacular spectacular)
...also selfishly since it's one of the few old Broadway theaters I've not visited yet. And also because I saw the School of Rock tour last night and hated it.

I'm of mixed mind about the movie, but think the show could be ...spectacular.

Winter Garden is such an odd space to me as it’s an oval, and worked well, I’m sure, for the horse shows but those sides are soooo extreme.

Nothing has been finalized. It looks very likely to be a late season addition at the Hirschfeld. The Shubert is highly unlikely. But it will likely be one of their 17 houses.

I’ve heard no announcements will be made about Broadway  until after the run ends next weekend, but that the production team is working to get what they feel best suits their needs in the time frame they want. It’s going places. B-roll was filmed last week and all the show’s official photography was done this week.

After the show last night while signing my playbill Toulouse said that they will be in New York next summer, so it is not looking like the show will move for the 18-19 season. More time for more theaters to open, and while there may be concerns about losing cast members in that time I do not think it is likely anyone will leave willingly for another project, all of them have considerable skin in the game at this point. So excited to see what they do with whichever theater they choose when the time comes!

It WILL be next season/possibly summer like Pretty Woman. It will be at Hirschfeld.

I still really hope this is not the case. The entire back half of the orchestra will miss the whole top of the stage at the Hirschfeld.

The safe money is the Hirschfeld.

The Hirschfeld just seems kinda ... hidden ... for something that should be a big and flashy spectacle. The Winter Garden seems perfect, imho.

The Imperial is now off the market.

Still hoping for the Winter Garden.

Is Dreamgirls still circling the Winter Garden? Or is it dead now? (I've seen rumors of both on here...)

Agreed that the Hirschfeld is a bad choice.

I'm rooting for an open at the Winter Garden still. I did this mock up because I can picture how beautiful that marquee would look standing over the heart of Broadway. Especially if they got a working windmill out there too.

That is so beautiful, but it seems we're more likely to see Beetlejuice or Dreamgirls at the Winter Garden.  Like a lot of other people here, I heard Moulin Rouge goes to the Hirschfeld next summer.

Freaking stunning.

Another thought (to help my fantasy of it opening at the Winter Garden): if the producers already have a working relationship with the Shubert Organization because they have King Kong opening at the Broadway, doesn’t it seem likelier that they’d get a Shubert house for this property too (such as, say, the WG) versus another one like Jujamcyn’s Hirschfeld?

The Broadway seems like the perfect house for this show. The red walls would blend in well. Also Baz Luhrmann’s La Bohemia played there and had the same sort of stage design that extended into the audience. Also had scenery in the side boxes, etc.

King Kong is going into the Broadway.

I'd love to know why they want the Hirschfeld so bad. The Winter Garden is 100% the right choice for this show.
