Honestly, BwayGirl, from the view you described what you imagine what Rent should look like, I really don't buy it. I think it is only your opinion about what Rent should look like. I think Chris Columbus did a far better job. It is always easy to criticize other's work.
And I think Michael Bennett is really unfair to Anthony Rapp.

Whenever he's mentioned? Have you bothered reading the "Welcome Anthony Rapp" thread? If he posted every time he was mentioned, he'd have a post count rivaling Emcee's (sorry Em!).

Hi Anthony,
You rock! Do not let those people get to you. I do not think people who hate Rent are misguided souls who would just come to our side, if we just try a lot. I understand the criticisms of the movie. I agree with a few of them even. However, it would be really cool if people realized that these are real people who you are posting to. As Rent itself mentioned, we are living in an isolating age. It is wonderful that we can communicate with people from all over the world effortlessly. For me as a person with a speech disability, the Internet has been a complete godsend. I can even write on a message board to my favorite Broadway star:) However, I think at times it is hard for folks to remember that there are faces behind the typed words. And of course you are going to defend a movie that I can tell you absolutely loved to make of a musical that holds an incredibly sacred place in your heart. And I bet 10 years from now, it will still be incredibly special to you.
So let's all be nice to each other, and discuss issues, but don't insult people. I hope this isn't to rambling.

sanda, I just dug up that review, and I'm not sure I see exactly where I ever said what the film should "look like."
BSO, I'm only irritable when people are posting off topic on a Rent thread and they think I--the one who's on topic--should go away, or when people who don't know squat about Idina Menzel's vocal technique proclaim that she screams and she will lose her voice in a few years because of it. It's like a native Spanish speaker telling an English person that his grammar and syntax are terrible. But I digress...

I know its off topic but OMG I HATE when people say that, reguardless of whether they think they know what they are talking about. I just had to say that, it makes me so upset.

BroadwayGirl, I thought your post on the problems with the film was rational and not trying to assault the opinions of others.
Someone may have told you to "go away" they were of course out of line.
People who like the movie and or like Rapp are not necessarily Ass-Kissing Dame, that is whole the problem here, lumping everyone together and being a jerk is not helpful or called for.
