The difference between negative comments surrounding Foster's initial casting had to do with conceptions (that turned out to be wrong) that she was miscast; I don't think anyone was doubting her ability to sing, dance, act or give a hell of a star turn in a production. Star turn is something that you just can't associate with Block, I think she has a good enough voice but IMO she can't act through song, she can't deliver lines convincingly and she gets lost on stage. Sometimes you like a performer, sometimes you don't, I don't feel I should pay a certain amount of money to see a show with someone I just don't appreciate as a performer especially when I only get to see a limited amount of shows a year since I don't live in NY. Honestly, I wouldn't get a refund if the understudy had been on, it's Block's casting that makes me roll my eyes. Obviously I'll wait to find out when exactly Foster will be out in November since my tickets are for the 4th, maybe it's early enough that it'll be one of her last days.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
'songanddanceman2 - I know what you mean and where you're coming from, but sometimes it's just so disappointing when this sort of thing happens and you REALLY wanted to see the star. If you had your heart set on seeing Sutton Foster in ANYTHING GOES then no matter how you feel about Stephanie J. Block, you might just be disappointed about it.'
Oh that i totally understand, you have every right to be a upset.
ray-andallthatjazz86 It's strange because before Anything Goes i found Sutton very bland, good singer, good dancer, not a bad actor but so so bland. She really made me change my opinion of her with Anything Goes. As for Block, i liked her a lot in 9 To 5 (not so much the show) but her acting was fine in that show, very funny at times actually. Her presence on stage was never lost for me, i could not take my eyes off her (and i was there to see Janey). And she totally let Get Out and Stay Out take over her.
I guess that if you are not a fan of her's that fine, i can see why people would not be. All im saying is that sometimes people can shock you, let her get in the show first.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
Is there any inkling to what dates Steph is filling in? I'm seeing her in a Wicked Diva's concert in Akron Ohio November 19th and while I'm soooo happy for Stephanie I will be crushed if I can't see her the 19th!! I've been waiting for ages to see her perform!
I really do think everyone should give SJB a chance. I don't think it's a good idea to say that she will be awful in this role because she has never played it before. She has not even started yet and we're not sure what she'll be like in it. It's okay to say something like "I can't picture her in the role." Updated On: 10/20/11 at 09:33 PM
Okay, I'll say that then. "I can't picture her in the role." I've seen her (Ms. Block) work and am disappointed with Roundabout. It's just a confusing decision to me. There are so many posts saying "Give Ms. Block a chance" - well, there's a great endorsement. That should sell lots of tickets. You want to get a star in for the few weeks Sutton is out? Bring Snookie in. There's some publicity. It's only for a few weeks, why not. It's all about ticket sales right? Anything Goes doesn't need a star. Most of the house are tourists who frankly don't know Sutton, they know Anything Goes. They do want to see talent on the stage. If it's a show they don't know, they want to see someone they know. Good material would be nice, but the star draws the crowd when they don't know the show. Raves about Tari... against request to give Steph a chance... whatever. Tari's a great Reno. Kathleen should watch her show.

This run is so short that even if it is a complete disaster I don't think it really matters. Maybe a missed opportunity at worst.
Sad that ray-andallthatjazz86 has tickets for her first performance though, lol.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Haha, it's almost like a cosmic joke, basically since I do have such little appreciation for Stephanie J. Block's "acting" and I was soooo excited to see Sutton as Reeno, I really couldn't wait. I also was dying to see Rachel Griffiths make her Broadway debut in OTHER DESERT CITIES but all tickets are sold out for the days I'll be in town so clearly my Broadway trip isn't quite working out. I'm not sure whether I'll actually go see it :-/ Thanks for posting the dates on here though!
