What made the tv show fun was it was visually surreal. Overtly theatrical with fake skies and high key lighting.

Exactly, it's really hard to do that on stage. They gave it a shot at Kennedy Center, but it just wasn't even close to capturing that same magic. This should be extremely limited since the only fans of the show are basically this message board. Alex Brightman and Sara Chase are awesome, but I doubt they'll sell any tickets here.

I want to know too!! How do these shows get green lit? (Glory days, smash, story of my life, Lennon, Queen of Versailles, High Fidelity)

I saw it and the sets were pretty simple/small at KC.  I'd hope they'd up the production values for Broadway.  What I saw at KC felt pretty rough/early.

On stage, I already expect artifice so meh.

The visuals of the TV show were one of the things that really DIDN'T work for me. Synthetic and surrealistic is great, but this tv show had a modern look: digital photography, CGI and greenscreens, harsh (yet nontheatrical) lighting, etc. Instead of leaning into the surreality of 40s movie-musicals (shooting on film, hand-painted drops, in-camera effects, an almost proscenium-like effect).

A six month run of a fairly sizable show that is a straightforward adaptation of a season of a minor tv show? They must’ve made one helluva pitch to investors.

Broadway, of course, relies on a fair amount of limited runs - both intentional and unintentional. But something about adapting a niche streaming show about musical theatre into a piece of musical theatre, hot on the heels of both a cancellation of said television show and the flopping of another musical about another television show doing basically the exact same thing feels… so incredibly stupid to me. Purely from a producing standpoint.

The show may be GREAT, for all I know. I would happily eat my hat over a successful Broadway musical (and Lord knows the cast will show up for as long as they’re able and give 100%). Maybe they find the secret to its success in the months between the KC run and April 2026. From an outside perspective, though, I’m left wondering just what the money people at the top of this enterprise are thinking.

Wait until 30 million Purple Rain, 25 -30 million Lost Boys, 30 million Dolly Parton, 23 million Galileo, 22 million Wanted and 25 million Queen of Versailles come to town.. That is almost 200 million in investor risk with no home run financially or creatively out of town.  How did they get booked? Stars, cronyism, Hollywood studios pulling strings, enticing IP, Shubert's seem to have their own process...but they are 0 for 35 in recoupment for original musicals since 2018.

LOST BOYS is a crazy proposition to me. The film's notoriety is not on the level of flops like BTTF or GROUNDHOG DAY, The Rescues aren't bringing notoriety as composers, the lead producers are new to Broadway, the Palace is a massive barn, and Michael Arden's financial track record as a director is not as stellar as his creative track record. Maybe it'll surprise everyone! But this could be LESTAT or DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES or GHOST all over again.

An original show with no stars like WANTED costing $22 mil is crazy to me...I yearn for the days of COME FROM AWAY's $12 million or DEAR EVAN HANSEN's $9.5 million. Even MAYBE HAPPY ENDING feels like a bargain now at $18 million.

PARTON and PURPLE RAIN somehow seem a little more digestible given the IP and the post-Broadway potential, but...I'm glad none of these shows have my money!

That was cancelled - this is the stage production that premiered at the Kennedy Center earlier this year.
"

Could have been picked up by someone else. What's the relevance of the picnic basket to the stage version? (haven't seen it so legitimately asking)
"

It wasn't. It's weird you aren't listening to people. It was cancelled and the creators want to bring it to Broadway. Kennedy Center was a test to see if people were interested, which they seem to be.
"

It's weird you're being so hostile over someone asking a genuine question! But weird antisocial behavior isn't anything new on this forum...

Anyways, thanks to the normal members of society for clarifying."

Not hostile brah, just learn to read what Jordan said the first time because he informed you it was cancelled and you still, stupidly, asked again."

What is the matter with you?

I'm personally very excited to see this but, yeah, unless they have some casting trick up their sleeve, this is gonna be a tough sell I'm afraid.

Would the average Joe get that the title is a play on Brigadoon? Have they ever even heard of Brigadoon?
"

Not only the average Joe hasn't heard about Brigadoon or understands what Schmigadoon is based on, you average casual theater fan doesn't know or cares about it. As someone has mentioned, some of these DOA Broadway productions do start looking like a not so elaborate tax evasion scheme for producers and investors.  Who the hell do they think is the audience for this? After the article about collapsing Broadway, these kind of announcements make me want to give up seeing new musicals altogether.

It costs like 2 million just load a show into Broadway. It's not only the budgets. It's the system and inflation.

I still think it's a missed opportunity that they didn't use season 1 for act 1 and season 2 for act 2. Instead, they used it as a continuous story, with Josh and Melissa suddenly being in the other era after the break, and the characters no longer recognizing them.

Unpopular opinion: the songs in season 2 are better.

Skywalker, that’s a fun idea in theory but I think there’d have to be toooooooo much cutting and shoehorning to make it work. Might make for a sillier evening tho, which isn’t a bad thing.

I also think the second season is much stronger- it was a more inventive, fast-moving season and the fun came from the mashups of plots and characters. The first season too often leaned into “gee, aren’t old musicals corny af?” and it didn’t help that Josh was an intensely negative character.

Season 1 was essentially one joke. It was Pleasantville.

The second season was just a more clever ribbing of the 60’s and 70’s dark and alternative broadway era.

Also them thinking they get to go back to fun musical land but instead they’re like “ugh there’s so much morally wrong here.” Was just way funnier.
