SCHOOL GIRLS headed to Broadway

Loved this play!!
And for those wondering, all precedent says it will be considered a REVIVAL.

Fantastic! I missed it off-Broadway so I’m excited to get the chance. Jocelyn Bioh and Whitney White’s work on Jaja’s African Hair Braiding was one of the best collaborations I’ve seen onstage in a long time.
I was surprised to learn White hadn’t directed it at MCC, given how fond theaters have been of reviving productions wholesale in recent years. I much prefer new productions, personally, so it’s a good surprise.

I truly can’t believe the MCC production was 9 years ago now. It feels so much more recent.
But yes- definitely will be considered a revival, especially as this seems to be an entirely new production.

One of my favorite shows of the 2010s. Can't wait to see this gem of a play again.

This is amazing new. I absolutely loved this play off-Broadway and felt it deserved more attention.
I hope this is a bit of the John Proctor Is The Villain effect---theaters realizing that plays about young people actually have an audience.

Saw this down at the Lortel and loved it. I wanted to see it again but was unable to as it stayed with me for a long while after I saw it. I hope this gets as good a cast as the original cast.

SCHOOL GIRLS would have to close in time to make way for AWAKE AND SING! at the Friedman, anyway.

Erin Morton (Martha in the Heathers revival) is having quite the start to her theatre career!

Amazing cast, amazing play, and perfect play for Whitney White to be directing. I'm SO excited for this!!

I saw (and thoroughly enjoyed) the original run at the Lortel back in 2017 but didn't feel the need to revisit this play, but this cast has totally changed my mind!

I have more faith in her on this one. It's not new and not a musical. It took the Broadway production for her to get Liberation fully together. The Last 5 Years was truly awful direction. Real concerned about her taking over the new musical - Imitation of Life.
But I think she is a good choice for SG; O,TAMGP. All female plays seem to suit her well - and this one is finished, and already strong.

Why is it that when a director has one bad production everyone starts having concerns and doubts about their future work? Yes, White's Last Five Years didn't work, but she's also had Liberation, Jordans, Jaja's African Hair Braiding, On Sugarland, What to Send Up When It Goes Down, Our Dear Dead Drug Lord. Does everything have to be perfect?

Those are all small plays - and not all of those went over as well as Liberation & Jaja.. She doesn't have a good track record with musicals - or plays outside of a certain range.

exactly my point. she's better suited for this than musicals or new plays or larger material. Small specific work has been strong for her - most of it. Musicals and some new plays less so. (as mentioned, Liberation took awhile to get together - it was much stronger after it opened on Broadway, still a little off-kilter in earlier previews like off broadway - but the material/play was still holding up the developing direction).

Are you in the rehearsal rooms for Liberation? Or did you happen to hear this on your coffee break?

I saw it 3 times both on broadway and off. It was clear from watching and listening to it.
