Did anybody get to see Scary Spice when she did that stint as Mimi in Rent on Broadway? I'd like to hear what she sounded like...anybody know where there's a clip of her singing one of Mimi's songs or something? How was she as Mimi?
"I GET A MARK SCARF!! Haha! now i must come up with an e-vil plot to get the Maureen mooing cow and a pair of plaid Roger pants."
Had the misfortune of seeing her twice, actually. At first I thought her raspy hoarse voice was a character choice, and then I realized no no, that was her attempting to sing. It was not pretty. Nor was her attempt to hide her accent.

I too had the misfortune of seeing her twice. The second time I was told she was out for the night so I went to see the understudy at the time. Much to my disapointment I had to sit through another painful 2 hours. She not sing the material, her 'Without You' was horrendous. She was totally late on all of her entrances (for example, not at the door in time to hit the knocker with the music during 'Light My Candle' but literally still all the way across the stage so she didn't even bother leaving and coming back), and I agree with JACXR, I have never heard a Latina with a british accent...

Once upon a time I was a shy young thing Could barely walk and talk so much as dance and sing But let me hit that stage I wanna take my bow Cause Mama I'm a big girl now!
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
yea i took one of my best friends to see her cause he loves the spice girls. She was really not good, I wanted her to be good but as stated before Mimi shouldn't go in and out of a british accent and shouldn't sound like she is always congested. Yea it was not a pretty sight, but I give her props for trying.
"But I relish every brillant inspired moment. This is who I'm determined to be- an actor/singer/dancer-no, I take that back, this is who I am. These people are my tribe, my destiny. I know it.

Joey Fatone and the Ex-Mr. Jessica Simpson's little brother (I still refuse to believe he was a "big name") weren't exactly the best choices either. I mean, the producers kept the show on Broadway even when attendance wasn't that great, so I can't hate them too much. But every time I see someone posting about what a great Maureen Kelly Clarkson would make, I have to shudder, because I wouldn't put it past the the producers to try.

I saw Mel B. twice. The major things that I couldnt take was the huge key change in Another Day, and her WIthout You. Oy.
However, and this may have something to do with the fact that I slightly biased to Jeremy Kushnier, who I saw opposite her both times, I thought her chemistry with him, and their dramatic scenes (as far as acting goes) were pretty decent.
I think I also dismissed her brittish accent the first time because I wasn't paying too much attention to it, but yeah, it was pretty obvious the second performance.
She did look amazing in the part, and I give her credit for her dancing, but her vocal troubles really overshadowed everything else she did on stage.

Take a piece of chalk. Now use it to write on a blackboard but make sure that you press it firmly on the blackboard so that the chalk makes as loud a sound as it can. That sound that you get sounds better than Scary Spice did when I had the misfortune of seeing her perform in RENT.

Oh lord, Mimi with a British accent, she's suppose to be Latina. Though Mel.B did look the part but, she DEFINATLY didn't have the voice for it, at all.
tiny thread Jack, anyone see Jeremy Kushnier in it, i know he did it with Mel for a while.

First and only time I saw Rent she played Mimi. She ended up losing her voice by Goodbye Love and couldnt make it through the Finales without coughing. She lost her voice progressively throughout the show. It was bad. Not very nice introduction to the musical.
No JAC I agree, Jeremey does not rank high on my list of Rogers. And Scary Spice DID always lose her voice by the end of the show, sometimes by the end of Out Tonight! It seemed like she was putting in an honest effort to do the part justice, but I agree that her lack of pitch overshadowed all else.
She had vocal problems, certainly. She could belt all right but when she quieted down she would lose it and crack, at least on the night I saw her. That said, I thought she was a credible and convincing actress and the fact that she was older than most Mimis lent an extra touch of pathos to the role. And whoever said that she and Jeremy Kushnier had good on-stage chemistry, I agree.
