I think we can all agree it's exciting/poignant to imagine Sondheim in previews trying to add something to the ending. The piano starts working - maybe...
Act one has around 38 to 42 minutes of song. Approximately 5 to 8 minutes of that is music playing while speaking in middle of songs like when they are on road traveling . Act two has approximately 12 to 15 minutes of singing with an additional 12 to 15 minutes of scoring toward the end.
For comparison Into the woods has about 70 minutes on the cast album.
Passion has about 36 to 40 minutes for act 1 and around 35 to 39 minutes of singing and underscoring with dialogue for act 2
In regards to the ending if they did add a song they easily could have tried it for a performance or two and realized it didn't work for that moment and decided against adding anything.

Yes, if the explanation for the lack of music is that the piano goes silent (a weak marketing/PR spin), then it follows that there should be a song when the piano is heard once more for that explanation to hold up.
But there is no music whatsoever, no scoring nothing, until they figure things out. Then the music comes back new motifs, new sounds. Sondheim really could have left it as it is, if he were still alive, even to push the envelope on what a musical really is, it doesn't need to have an I want song nor an 11 o'clock number to be successful, a lot of musicals use that paint by numbers, and truly how emotional can that be if it's processed to be delivered that way. So, to speak on behalf of Sondheim thinking that he would be writing an ending is wishful thinking. Truly, no one, except maybe the other creatives of this musical know, so we should just accept what it is, and be very happy we have at least this amount of new sondheim music whether sung or scored..And if it doesn't work for you doesn't mean it's any less than anything else except in your opinion. I personally think it's brilliant, the music, the lyrics, the new songs, the way it enhances the source material.
Do we know what roles Bernadette and Nathan played in that workshop? Nathan seems best suited for the butler (Denis O’Hare) track. I suppose Bernadette could play the Rachel Bay Jones part or maybe the Amber Gray (but she has nothing to do).
The reading was spoken with no singing, so I think Bernadette could have played the Amber Gray part as there are a lot of good spoken lines? To be honest, if Bernadette said "I want to **** you on the floor" or whatever the line was in a reading context it goes against her personality SO MUCH I could imagine the entire room being in hysterics. No wonder they found it 'encouraging'.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I’d be surprised if Nathan and Bernadette weren’t Leo and Marianne in the reading. They likely did the reading as a favor. Cannavale and Bay Jones are so perfectly matched with those roles.
It's also possible that the roles were tailored to the Shed cast (ages & character tics adjusted, etc).
Previous readings included Norm Lewis, Shuler Hensley, Sierra Boggess, Nancy Opel, and Marc Kudisch...Nancy seems like an easy fit for the housekeeper, and Kudisch would kill in the Pasquale role.
I've never met Bernadette before, but I might see if I can catch her at the stage door of OLD FRIENDS and I might ask what part she played lol.

She played the Tracie Bennett role.
"
Is this true? When I suggested that Bernadette should replace Tracie Bennett in the role to take it to Broadway I was told Bernadette couldn't do it (doesn't seem like anyone except me thinks Bernadette can do everything lol). Admittedly, Bernadette is not exactly an accent-giving character actress, but still hehe.

I take a peek every morning and within 20 minutes it’s sold out and says to come back the next day.
also. Does anyone know how long that code will last ARE20 would love to use that this weekend"
For everyone wondering about rush later in the day, I had success today at about 5:45 for a single rush ticket in the front row through Today TIx. I have been trying almost every morning and they are always in someone else's cart, but I kept checking the app today and saw the "limited tickets available" and the rush button was live again late afternoon. You couldn't get two, just one, but my friend was able to go on at the same time and also get a single ticket, (row B) just not next to mine. Also, I couldn't use the ARE20 code, just FYI. Good luck!
Wanting to book the final performance to see how much it has changed (I saw the third preview) - what is the chance of this extending or adding an extra performance do we think?

There is no balcony in that theater. It’s just behind the last row of seats. It’s a small theater and your view will be great. Enjoy!
Got the email too - it's as though they knew I was going to book my flights today! Do we think it will sell out? (I was in the queue to buy tickets for this the first time around and we all know how we thought that was gonna go...)
