Celia is leaving to do "Les Miserables". Not sure if she's leaving for good, or taking a leave of absence. There should be some official announcement soon.
I just wanted to know who has seen Betsy Wolfe (as Rona Lisa Peretti) in the SF production of Spelling Bee. Did anyone else think she was absolutely amazing?
If you read through the thread, you will see lots of reviews on the SF production and cast.
I wish I had thought it through to stop there last wednesday to see the matinee! I'm really kicking myself for screwing that up and not even thinking about it til I was already past SF!
betsy wolfe is an amazing singer! she really blows the top off during the "i love you song". my only *thing* about her (not really a thing, really) is that she doesn't look much older/matronly/teacherlike than the rest of the cast, so perhaps not the best casting in terms of how she looks like a school administrator, but definitely still works. liotte, I know you've been away for a lot of the summer, but have you seen Kevin Smith Kirkwood? There was an insert that he joined the cast in the beginning of August, covering Mitch & Chip. If you do, could you post a review? Thanks!
I haven't yet seen him, has he even gone on? I get back to the city tomorrow and will go to the Bee this week at some point, so I'll check it out.
I have seen quite a few understudy inserts in the playbill, and names that have gone up on the board, and they never perform. Katie Boren (who is in the tour, I think) comes to mind. Lee Zarrett is another one.
I don't know if he's gone on yet. He was sitting in the back at the performance I went to.
I always had Katie's name as an insert too. I met her after one of the shows (where she didn't perform) and she was really nice. I hope she does well on the tour.
I saw the show in SF this afternoon. This is my third time in SF and the best one ever! I took my friend who has never seen the show and she loved it. I got to see Stanley (finally), he was so sweet. I made an original Spelling Bee mug for him before and he loves it :) Sorry that they are leaving SF but am glad that Bostonians can enjoy their performance.
Betsy Wolfe is also my first (and only) Rona Lisa Peretti, and I adore her. It didn't even occur to me how much younger she is than her character until I did some google-fu and researched the show.

Are Kevin Smith Kirkwood and Jacqui Polk in the Broadway cast? Kevin Smith Kirkwood has a great voice, I saw him play Mereb in Aida. Also, the dude is amazingly tall. Glad to hear he's on Broadway
Dean: Can I tell you something?
Lorraine: That depends on what it is.
Dean: I think you're really really pretty.
Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.
Kevin was an insert in the playbill about three weeks ago. I would think he's still there now. Yeah, he's really tall. He was sitting in the back of the theatre, but he was sitting on a cusion you'd use for a lawn chair...
Does anyone know when/ if Spelling Bee is / will be closing in NY anytime soon?
"Broadway is a very special place, filled with very special people, people who can sing and dance, often at the same time!
They are a different people, a multi-talented people, a people...who need people...and who are, in many ways, the
luckiest people in...the world." --Spamalot

<< Me and Norbie. I look icky becuase I was FREAAAAKKKIIINNNGG out.
I don't think it's even close to closing in NY. I certainly hope not. It's a very cheap show to run, and it's in a small theatre. It still has very good attendence and is popular. So It won't be closing anytime soon.
Congrats to Celia! We'll miss you! I got my ticket for her last day.
Also, Bee in NYC now has student rush, if anyone is interested. On sale when the box office opens, $25, and usually the last row on both sides. They have 20 tickets available.
I finally saw the Bee for the first time, and in New York. It was amazing. I won the lottery and at in the second bench. Perfetc seats for a perfect show. I can't express how much I loved it.
