Isn't this really just the "name every lead in a musical that enunciates, and happens to be in a spotlight" thread? Fact is, whether you see it or not, actors who enunciate, spit. I've had any variety of performers spit in my eye in various shows. There's always that moment of "got you good that time, didn't I?" backstage.
It's unavoidable if you're hydrated and projecting...if you don't see it, you're still getting spit on. Or sweat on. Sitting down front while those dancers spin around and around? Gazing in awe with your mouth agape? You're drinking it.
This thread is making me aroused.

I saw Ben Fankhauser today in Beautiful (on tour in Boston). He was spitting up a storm. I loved it.

Honestly with microphones there's not too much projecting happening these days. And with this belt heavy scores, a lot of people are saving their voices.
I would chalk it up to enunciation, but then why don't women do it?
As a male actor, I can't say I remember any costars spitting at me in the face, or me spitting at them.
I think it stems from OVER enunciation.

Dan deluca in newsies. Felt so sorry for Stephanie styles. I sat in one of the last rows of the orchestra and still his spit was visible.

Hilarious! I felt the spray with Billy Porter at Kinky Boots - 3rd row. But then when I saw Groff at A New Brain I was blown away!!! He definitely wins the award from anyone else I've seen. I guess its something you get used to in the theatre world, but I just wanted to keep wiping my own face for them...

Was at Little Shop of Horrors today and Jonathan Groff was in prime spitting form. All over the front row. So I googled “Jonathan Groff spitter” and this thread came up! First time I ever saw him on stage was Hamilton and remembered him being quite the spitter then too! Nothing has changed it seems.
Nevertheless - he was GREAT in LSOH.

Funny, I was just thinking about this last week after seeing The Inheritance, and watching Kyle Soller's saliva spray arc through the air through much of the show. At one point he had a scene with someone else (I don't think it was Hickey; maybe Toby?) where they were standing a short distance apart, and watching their spit showers arc toward each other (visible from 10 rows back) was kind of amusing, like they'd been blocked that way so their spit wouldn't reach each other.

I’m pretty sure I remember the sweat pouring off of Gavin Creel in Book of Mormon. Though NOTHING comes close to Lee Evans, who must have been a dresser’s nightmare during the London run of The Producers.
