She needs some training, but she is exactly what the world needs right now. She is the epitome of what we have lost over the years in the entertainment industry: talented personalities over manufactured barbies. I'd pay for her CD or to see her live. She represents far more than just a voice; she represents hope, optimism, and gumption, things everyone is striving for. I hope she gets a great career out of this. Also, it is never to late to dream. :)
I saw an interview with her after she sang. It must have been the day after. Her hair was slightly styled and she was wearing more "designer looking" clothing. I don't know how the show works over there but it looked like a stylist worked on her look a bit.
I too teared up when I watched it and I wish her the best. Her dream is coming true and I hope she gets to sing for the Queen.

Agreed that she has some technique problems.
She'd be good onstage, but not as Fantine, IMO.
Susan Boyle- the biggest and best kept secret in 'Brigadoon'!
Cameron is in there already with a contract being drawn up in the last few days.
He has said he will spend whatever time it takes to get her stage worthy but he is in awe of her raw talent.
Mdm. Thenardier in the next 18 months I guess or something along those lines.
I'm not the least bit surprised. If she weren't a bit old for the role, I'd say she'd be playing Fantine herself.
I saw the clip from her appearance on CBS this morning. The "styling" didn't look any better, in fact, the hairdo was lopsided. I'd rather see her in her natural beauty. What a wonderful person!
She's got a pretty voice, but NO presence. A pretty voice only gets you so far. I guess people expected her to sound the way she looks. I think if there was an ATTRACTIVE person singing that way, it would have had the same impact.
They've got a LONG way to go to make her stage-worthy.
She's an amateur from the sticks.
She never wanted what is about to happen to her.
She isn't at an audition, its a talent competition!
Of course she has no presence, she's never been on stage before leave alone International TV.
The most public thing she's done is a solo in a church choir and Karaoke!
Give her a break!

This is really good television. I thought her voice wasn't that special...but I was sobbing by the end anyway!
Patti Loops called her up!:
"Even Patti LuPone, the original Fantine Les Miz, called up Susan and said, "Susan, you've got pluck, girl." Way to slap a ho in the caterpillar-brows, Patti!"

I spoke to a Mackintosh family member the other day, and I was told that Cameron's going to put Susan in the 25th Anniversary Les Mis Concert Production thingie.

Who are you to judge her appearance?

I thought she pretty good, it was surprising because she doesn't fit my mental picture of Fantine.
I give Patti a lot of credit for taking the time to make that phone call. That must have been the cherry on top for this woman, as she probably was most familiar with Patti's rendition of the song from the cast recording.
Damn this lady is everywhere.

I watched Youtube and saw her performance. I think that she is amazing!
Some posters here will have their favorites and so there will be comparisons to Elaine Paige, etc. Some will say she has no stage presence or training but you posters need to realize that there are some actors/broadway performers who NEVER majored in theater/music in college but have gotten lead roles in major broadway productions to include film work and television work. It is called NATURAL TALENT. Either a person has it or they don't.
There are stars who never went to college but took a couple of acting classes and just hit it big time. And beauty and looks sometimes can hinder a performer getting work because they have "the look" onstage but fail in their performance.
English actress Patricia Routelege (Keeping Up Appearances) is not skinny and has facial flaws but that is what makes her character Hyacinth so believable. The late great Kate Smith is another example too of talent over 20 something beauty with borderline anorexia. The problem is that the public perception of the anorexic 20 something with surgical work done is the best in the business but also remember that Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle did really great with their roles in Everybody Loves Raymond so age is a non issue for me. Betty White, Cloris Leachman, Glenn Close, Elaine Stritch, among others do just as well as their much younger peers with finding work and doing projects.
Patti Lupone had some very good comments in reviewing her performance so since she originated the song performance, she would be the best judge on the technical side of the performance IMO.
Maybe for some their will be a restrictive generational age gap difference so some may not be quite able to think or look out of the box or the perimeter of their own views.
I think that Susan Boyle will most likely get an agent and probably very very soon and will have a recording contract on her desk for signature soon too. I hope she gets a good quality agent and management team with a great lawyer and publicist to handle her schedule with interviews, etc. Because the offers are flying all over the place and will continue!
If she wasn't great, she was sure damn good. Just imagine if she had had the opportunity as a young woman to have voice and dramatic training. It's a wonderful human interest story and it made me feel really terrific.

Just... wow. I just think she's beautiful inside and out, and that her voice is simply stunning. To be honest, this is probably one of the best (or at least my favourite) rendition of this song I have heard. You are amazing, Susan Boyle, keep going and wow the world with your talent.
I've gotta say this all comes across as very soppy to me. So there's a middle-aged woman who can sing. There are plenty of them out there. Yes, she has a nice voice, yes, her voice took people by surprise. I didn't feel any depth, presence, or emotion to her though. And why are people pushing for her to be on stage? Can she act? Handle 8 shows a week?

Well, it's just that Fantine's supposed to be pretty young--she was nineteen when she got pregnant with Cosette, IIRC.
Wow, just wow. I really don't care for Les Mis, or this song for that matter. But she had me on the verge of tears.
Just to show the impact of Susan, I Dreamed a Dream is number 39 on itunes' top 100. Now thats amazing!

It could be because they did feel depth presence and emotion. I know I did.
I felt depth and emotion. And as another thought the contest is not to judge acting skills.

They knew she could sing. You audition for the show producers before actually "auditioning". The reactions before and after were probably rehearsed.
