THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW reviews — Page 3

Just saw this tonight and had a blast! Set, atmosphere, and vibes were all top notch. It would've been perfect for me if they had a couple cast changes (cough, cough, Harvey & Juliet, cough, cough). Stephanie surprised me with her vocals. Of course, Luke was the highlight. I forget that the songs are soooo catchy. Great audience, perfect amount of call backs, and overall fantastic production.

Caught Rocky last night from the back row! Loved it and exactly what I wanted from my first night in NYC!
Loved the expensive cheapness and how it invaded the whole theatre!
Luke was fab but Stephanie really was the stand out - SUCH physicality!
Those seats with that legroom was PUNISHING and I was very happy it was a short show. Found it very amusing everyone running and queuing in the interval - we do this with more style in the West End ![]()
Was anyone there last night ? RIGHT at the end of the Time Warp the whole cast stopped and this man walked to the front of stage from the auditorium and, like, clicking his fingers and this random woman walked off the stage and then the cast went STRAIGHT back into the song! It was so strange, does this normally happen? It was so quick and brief and almost worked in the song (but then I was a bit drunk and high)!
only a little bit of shouting out tonight, can’t say I really missed it. This was my 8th Rocky over 32 years

All that Yazz said: "Those seats with that legroom was PUNISHING and I was very happy it was a short show."
The seats in Studio 54 are downright roomy compared to those in the August Wilson and Helen Hayes theaters.

Also, would love it if they recorded a cast album. Luke sounds heavenly and Stephanie sounds incredible. Can't get "Don't Dream It, BEEEE-eee It" out of my head 😩.

Loved a lot of the arrangements, and Luke, Stephanie, and Andrew have such great voices.

I'm desperate to hear Juliette Lewis' "Science Fiction," because the responses are all over the place. Guess I could hate it (that seems the majority resposne), but I'm loving the idea that she doesn't appear to best it, but to sing it kind of wisfully and tenderly. I think that actually fits the moment better, even if it means the opening isn't a big, rousing number.

Juliette was actually fine starting off the show with Double Feature. I actually thought she wasn't as bad as people were writing on here. BUT, In ensemble numbers she is absolutely giving NOTHING. Also, I thought the weakest number was Harvey's "Rock n Roll." He was actually fine as Dr. Scott. He moved a lot better on the chair than trying to rock out as Eddie

I thought Juliette was great but fades away due to the direction as Magenta.
It boggles my mind when she plays the Usher that she doesn’t make her entrance through the audience but I thought her voice was beautiful

I saw Rachel Dratch posted she would be speaking at Dartmouth’s Graduation on June 14. Total bummer since that’s the date I have tickets for; it’s not listed on their website anywhere that I can see. Any other scheduled absences I should be aware of?

Looks like Adam Lambert turned down the chance to be Frank N Furter in this production.

I think it might’ve been for the better, if only because he had that innate Frank energy and vibe and so people would probably go in with preconceived ideas instead of letting him cook. I think having him head up the (god awful) 2016 remake would’ve been a better idea at the time when he was at his peak fame.
I know many people were, at best, skeptical about Luke when he was announced, but he’s really putting his whole puss in this role and it’s paying off in dividends. It’s definitely gets the Tony for “Forgive Me. I Wasn’t Aware Of Your Game”

Love Adam and he'd have been great, but I doubt he'd have moved tickets on his name (not that I think Luke Evans either, but not the point). I literally met him in my local dive gay bar in Brooklyn at 3:00am on a Saturday night and nobody even cared that he was there.

Is Luke doing the whole run until November? Orville Peck might be a good replacement.

That seems to be the question. I wouldn’t be surprised if he left after the 19th and came back in September (he has a summer home in Ibiza), allowing a potential replacement to get a few weeks of a test run in before taking over for the holidays and beyond.
I had said Orville Peck to a friend not too long ago. I’m wondering if he would have any pull here. By the time he reached CABARET, the show was already sputtering out but he got great notices. (I think he might be my favorite Emcee ever out of 10 I’ve seen)

My random thoughts…
Luke Evans-wow wow wow! His “I’m Going Home” is worth the ticket price. I really loved him. I’m hoping my friend wants to see it so I can go back. An incredible performance. (Joshua Henry is still my Tony pick. I’ve loved that man since Violet.) but Luke is awesome and he gets extra points for doing it all in heels. Fun fact: JH and LE both played Gaston!
I love Amber. I’ve seen her in a few things. I know she has a beautiful voice. I didn’t love her in this. I was missing Raul Esparza. I felt the same with MJ. I listen to her version of Suddently Seymour all the time. I don’t know what she’s doing here. Talented people-odd choices.
I liked the shagginess of it all. It had this, “Let’s put on a show” energy.
There was some interaction from the audience. Not over the top. I think it was just right. During “Time Warp” people started dancing. I felt for the ushers who had to ask them all to sit down. In their defense, it is a bop.
I’m trying to remember the last Broadway version. I don’t think there was much interaction at that one either. Not at the performance I saw anyway.
Andrew Durand and Stephanie Hsu were wonderful. Still wish Dead Outlaw got a longer run.
I’d go back in a second just to see Luke Evans again. What a star.

Dartmouth’s Commencement Ceremony is over by 1pm (starts around 9:30am) and Hanover is an hour flight to NYC. Her performance attendance has always been impeccable so I think it’s safe to assume she’ll be at THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW fully rested. That’s why nothing was posted about her not performing that Thursday night. 😎

Adam moved tickets for Cabaret which I feel was a harder sell than Rocky Horror.

I have to say that listen the first notes of ''Time Warp'' for the first time in a theater was thrilling, and the production is very good as a whole.
Will I remember for a long time? No. Does this production adds something new to this musical? No. But it was fun!
I know its part of the show, but the break it's not needed. ''Rocky'' is a vibe and I would to a straight 100 minute version without a spot.
Luke Evans, Stephanie Hsu and Andrew Durand were esplendid, and Josh Rivera... I mean, wow. Evans and Hsu were especially captivating for the beginning, and both had stellar solo numbers that were highlights of the night for me.
Can't say the same about Juliette Lewis, was weak and low pressure all the time. I understand what MJ is doing, but it doesn't work all the time.
Sam Pinkleton had his moments in this production, but it's not bat sh*t crazy as he could go.

Like Follies, Rocky was originally an intermissionless show. It was also a 90-minute show (there were two performances a night on weekends, in London and L.A.).

A lot of great performances in this production, with my surprise around how much Evans and Grey would knock it out of the park. Durand and Hsu were absolutely excellent, as well. I adore Michaela Jae, and loved some of the unnerving physicalities and movements she brought to the role, but can understand where people didn’t care for some of the vocal nuances. I would have preferred to see her as Magenta/Usherette, honestly, and bring some great energy to that role!
I commend Juliette Lewis for giving it her all, but I don’t know if the stage is her calling. Unless it was her direction or artistic take on the role, she mostly looked uncomfortable and lost most of the show. Unless she was sick and vocally under the weather at my performance, I’m not sure how she got the part.

I'm not sure what the rationale was for putting Hsu in Leading Actress, but I feel like she could've had a really good chance in Featured. (To be fair, I haven't seen Chess).
