in addition to Thaxton, I'm bothered that David Hyde Pierce, James Scully and Bianca Leigh were similarly snubbed
As others have noted, I don't think Smash is in the immediate trouble that Boop and RWHC are because it's been doing well enough so far. But I do think it will fizzle out quickly, probably an end of summer closing.

Understood but realistically BOOP did about as well as expected with nominations. Nobody really thought it would get "Best Musical" nomination which in the end is the only thing that really matters for box office help."
I think that inexplicable number of Drama Desk nominations it received yesterday gave some people (not I) some hope. Maybe they can still try to get some mileage out of those and being the most nominated show there. "Outstanding Musical Nominee" with the actual award in small type might be their best course of action to lure in the tourists.

Truly baffles me he allowed this to be that show's Broadway debut.
This is the man who gave us Parade. This is the man who wrote the music and lyrics to Bridges of Madison County, some of the most gorgeous orchestrations I have ever heard in my life. It's insane to me that he brought such below average garbage with horrendous direction intentionally. The Last Five Years has been around for so long, it's done all over the world, theater nerds are so in love with it. It deserved an incredible Broadway debut.

GREAT POINT. BOOP! can't and won't sustain at the current weekly wraps. They had a very weak advance and the current grosses have them losing money every week."
Be less excited, dude.
I greatly underestimated how much people liked Death Becomes Her.
I'm disappointed by the lack of support for Operation Mincemeat. In addition to being a delightful comedy, I think the story it tells and the way it tells that story are what we need at this time in history.

Really? Did you see the show? He has a throw away part. And the one song he has with the puppets… funny… but… ehhhhhhh."
I have seen the show and he is fabulous in it . He is the gluethat holds it all together. His role is deceivingly difficult. It’s his genius that makes it look so easy ."
Christopher Seiber is wonderful in this and was very deserving of recognition. I have enjoyed his work for years. I would have given him a nod over Danny.

Helen J Shen is the biggest snub of the day especially since MHE is going to win Best Musical and a lot of other awards.

I'm mainly thrilled Megan Hilty made it in.
I'm not necessarily disappointed in the lack of nominations for Boop! or Smash, but I was hoping to see a Tony Award's performance from each of the shows. Regardless of the overall show, there are some fantastic numbers that would have looked great on TV for both of the shows.
While I don't consider it a snub, I do wish Josh Lamon got nominated for Death Becomes Her.

Mostly I just wish there were could have been more ties to recognize more of the amazing work this season! Specifically shouting out Helen J. Shen, Thom Sesma, and Alana Arenas (unfortunately the only Purpose cast member not nominated). No one I don't think is deserving or would have subbed out - just wish there was more space for Tony love!

I might get crucified for asking this, but are we all really so confident that Maybe Happy Ending is the heavy frontrunner for Best Musical? Death Becomes Her and Buena Vista got the same number of nominations as MHE. Death Becomes Her also edged out Shen in Best Actress to get both of their leads nominated. Buena Vista even got a Special Tony. I honestly think Best Musical is much more competitive than some on here believe.

No offense to Josh but cutting that role entirely would only help the show.

Even Dead Outlaw got score, book, director, and three acting nods

In my personal opinion, MHE is the Best Musical and I hope it does win!

I don't know if it's the heavy frontrunner but MHE is very much the frontrunner right now. Again, nominations =/= voter support. And nomination counts can be very deceptive- it's not always a sign of strength or love, but rather that a production simply has a lot more going on in it. Modest productions aren't going to rack up the numbers in design categories against bigger productions, for instance.
There are many reasons nominations are given and they run the gamut from belief they should win, to honoring a person generally, or to shut out another production the nominators would rather not see honored at all.

Agreed 100%
His role is not needed at all. The book writers could have beefed up Sieber’s role a bit and maybe then he would have a nomination?

Frankly, a high number of nominations doesn’t mean what it used to. (A recent one of many examples: HELL’S KITCHEN received the most nominations for a musical last season - 13 - and walked away with two awards.) I also think the narrative behind MHE helps its odds. It’s an entirely original musical that debuted on Broadway. It weathered the storm of dismal initial sales and survived the doldrums of winter to become a hit with both critics and audiences. It truly is the “little show that could.” I don’t necessarily think it’s a lock, but it’s certainly the front runner
Right out the gate, I think the ranking (in order of odds to win) is:
1) MAYBE HAPPY ENDING
2) DEAD OUTLAW
3) BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB
4) DEATH BECOMES HER
5) OPERATION MINCEMEAT
Christopher Sieber would have made a wonderul layered Herbie in Gypsy. Actually they should switch. Danny should be Ernest and Chris should be opposite Audra.
I am glad George C Wolf wasn’t nominated. He really messed things up.
Sieber is great in DBH and has plenty of opportunity to shine- but ultimately Ernest is the straight man in a high-camp diva showcase.
I think the noms look mostly about what I’d expected. A couple minor quibbles, the only true surprise to me was Igelhart. I do think if we’re doing the whole special Tony thing that the crew making the Sunset walk happen nightly should’ve gotten a nod- I expect good stage craft and a killer band when I go to the theatre. While I agree the band at Buena Vista Social Club is the heart of the show, the musicians at any Broadway musical I’d expect to be top tier. I don’t expect that 44th street is shut down nightly for a camera crew, that seems truly extraordinary.
