I'm not sure how "Little Shop of Horrors" would be considered underrated. It was a big success off-broadway and made into a successful film. I would consider it beloved.
Anyway, underrated for me would be "Floyd Collins"...and I love that someone mentioned "Moby Dick" I love that score and the concept. I wish I had seen it live!
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
Overrated: Jekyll and Hyde….nice music, just couldn't identify or empathize with the characters; apparently it was on Broadway for a while though so most would disagree with me. Kinky Boots….granted I saw it in L.A. last night and, while the performances were good, I just couldn't connect to the characters in that one either.
Underrated: Scottsboro Boys…I know it was controversial, but it was so emotional.
Underrated: Sunday in the Park with George. Beautiful message and beautiful music. Any of the classics. Due to all of the new mega musicals, the younger crowd has completely forgotten about the wonderful classics. When I mention Hammerstein musicals to anyone under the age of 18, they usually respond with an "ew." Overrated: Newsies, Wicked, Gentleman's guide, next to normal (sorry), the Fantasticks, A Little Night Music (love Sondheim, but it's my least favorite of his), and last and certainly least, Cats.
I'm a sucker for Sondheim, so I'll disagree on his music being overrated, maybe by some, but except for Forum, they all didn't recoup! But I do not like ALNM too! It just isn't interesting to me.
Overrated : Wicked, I found it very very long, that's all.
Underrated : Pacific Overtures, is a great musical IMO
Omg Pacific Overtures would make the greatest movie!! Passion also has gorgeous music. I don't think that Book of Mormon is overrated. I think that it's new and original and is a fantastic story.
Icecreambenjamin had A Little Night Music as overrated and mentioned about young people not knowing the classics...
This past Saturday I went down to Seattle and caught the last performance of a great production of Pasek & Paul's Dogfight. Sitting behind me were some loud, young drama students. During intermission one of them was on his phone goggling something and I overheard him read out to his date, "It says here that he did some show called ... A..Little..Night..Music? A Little Night Music? Have you ever heard of something called A Little Night Music?" and his date replied, "No, I don't know what that is."
I am just as obnoxious in person as I am online and it took every single ounce of self-control in my body to not turn around and give them a big lecture.
^ Yeah, THE PRODUCERS, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, BOOK OF MORMON, and SPAMALOT for that matter, all trading on the same kind of view of how essentially idiotic musical theater is and should be, and all equally overrated to my mind.
