I feel lucky that I went to high school just before the age of home video (the first Betamax cameras hit the stores right after I graduated). Some of the high school shows I did were pretty damn bad!

This is pretty bad too. Her Mrs. Meers is horrible.
This number from City of Angels, The Tennis Song, gets a lot of laughs from the audience. Unfortunately they're not laughing at the lyrics.

^Morosco, it's such a small world- that's me pushing the lung off! That was one of the most horrifying moments of any performance I've been in!
RE: The Tennis Song
That's the last thing I needed to see before I start working with high school students on City of Angels today. Thank goodness their director is obsessive over tech. If I show her that video, the iron lung won't come anywhere near the scrim.

What's really strange is that nothing like that had ever happened during any of the tech rehearsals or other performances. For some reason, the scrim happened to be further downstage that day.
Here is a little Golden Nugget that I found on the web just today. If you look through this guys vids you can see that he totally tears "Ladies in Their Sensitivities" to shreds in a bad way, not even attempting any of the E's or F's in the song.
No Good Notes aka No Bad News
This is just wrong on so many levels..... (not criticizing the very young performers' abilities/talent) (The clips were apparently discussed previously about YADA - apologies for the double post)
(There's also a more recent video of their "into the woods" which looks like they cut Act II - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nqTZ6TRpBs&feature=player_embedded#at=187)

I'm curious if you really thought the ITW video was a high school production..
That ITW is precious.
So impressed with the 7-year-olds, that show has some hard stuff even for adult actors!

So, my question is why are all of these schools using Jerry Mitchell's original choreography? I just thought it was weird that they all did it that way. Is Hairspray in the same category as West Side Story and A Chorus Line? Detachabble from the original choreography?
Odd.
That Into the Woods video is the cutest thing EVER!

I commend them for doing that number (and yay for the vocals), since aside from the Philharmonic concert, it's been pretty much lost to history. I also commend the dancer for not trying to replicate Michael Bennett.
Perhaps there are issues with the dancing, but my attention goes to April and Robert, who look and sound awkward. OK, thoughts during sex can be rather awkward, but Bobby descended into Michael Cera territory. What really bugs me is that Bobby always struck me as someone who'd take his freaking socks off.
Hey! In response to MrJNLong's question. I actually know lots of people in this show (the one itsmybirthday posted) and they told me their choreographer had been in Hairspray at a regional theatre before he came to choreograph their show. My guess is that because he was in the show already for a few months with much of the original choreography, it was in his vision that the show have the same type of choreography he had in his reigional production as well. As for the other schools...I know that in my school our choreographers tend to look at clips of dance numbers from the show and take things from that and then add their own uniqueness to it. I guess its just many high schools want to appear more professional now?

Wow . . .so incredibly bad. I just had to suppress a lot of laughter in my computer lab.
High school "Little Women": no choreography, no anything really.
