What are you talking about? They are fantastic. These are kids, all the leads were amazing with the exception of The Engineer. Did you even look at the other clips?
I'm usually one to be very forgiving in high school shows, but this was downright pathetic.
Did they even bother trying to look like they're in the 80's? Why did no one sing the melody on the chorus? The ENTIRE chorus missed an entrance The acting is awful. Since when is Ren a 2010 gangster and not a 1985 Chicagoan? What the HELL are they doing when they sing "Life keeps holding me down"??? Singing was horrid. They have no energy. They are not confident at all. Ren needs to pull his damn pants up! The orchestra was the only saving grace.
This is just embarrassing beyond belief. The rest of the videos make me want to cry, especially "Girl Gets Around."
By the way, a major Equity theatre near me did FOOTLOOSE last year and did NOT set it in the 1980's. They updated it to the present - and it made no sense.
I'm reminded by that last clip of Sue on Glee saying she'd seen I believe a Kindergarten production of Hair. This is almost as bad. Disturbing. Also, in the words of the censored Mark, "Really weird."
if there's a positive to come out of the RENT production.... it's that the parents and the school are OK with a putting on a production such as RENT... albeit very G-rated...
Re: Footloose. The script actually sets it in present day, though setting it in the '80's tends to make some of the super-cheesy dialogue more tolerable and it gives you more of a chance to have fun with costumes. Otherwise, there's nothing that gives it any reason not to be set in the present.

Re: Jekyll and Hyde. When was it moved to France? Totally can-can costumes there. And I HATE when I see the same moves repeated in staging/choreography within seconds of each other. Lack of imagination and training.
You would think that a director with enough musical theater knowledge to put on Merrily We Roll Along would be at least decent at directing. Take a look at their video of "Our Time", too. First of all, that chorus (which is way too large) just keeps doing weird arm-choreography that, apparently, is hard for all of them to do correctly. And those people with solos are just horrible, especially the ones singing "the best thing that ever could have happened", it just sounds horrible.
As an educator, I really thought the Saigon done by the high school in Dallas was fantastic. Yes, I saw the original against my will twice while I was in college(once, as part of a practicum and second, because my friends and I were in New York and my friend's mother thought Miss Saigon was more appropriate than Hedwig(which I saw a few months later on my own). I've always hated the show, but come on...these kids are fantastic and only a few of them are probably going to go on an do theatre post high school. Give 'em a break. As for the majority of the shows, makes you wish all high school productions were done by Vocal Adrenaline or New Directions, right?
I just watched the WCC Ragtime "Goodbye My Love/Journey On" video. A few comments.
1) The Mother has more of a Wisconsin accent than I do, and I'm actually from Wisconsin 2) I don't blame the conductor for speeding up "Journey On" 3) Where in the world is Tateh's accent?!!

I saw a youth community theater production of Rent and the funniest/biggest change they did was when Benny became friends with them at the end. It was after "Goodbye Love" I think. Now, I don't know Rent's exact plot that well, but I definitely don't remember that happening. It was weird because in one scene he was joking with Mark and Roger saying that he wasn't with Allison anymore and how he "hated that dog anyway" (the dog Angel killed). It's like, one minute Benny and Roger are fighting because of Mimi and the next minute they're BFF? And Benny was with them during "Your Eyes" and "Finale B." So funny!
so those RENT vids of the kids.... are all those videos completely taken down from youtube? i remember there was a thread about it but i can't find it... and that thread had alternate links... i've been telling my friends about it and they really want to see the clips!
