I saw the matinee today as well. Like MyLife, I won lotto.
I wasn't really a fan of Marcus's Benny. I love his voice, but that was about it. I disagree with MyLife in that his acting is superior to Chris's. I know he has only been on a handful of times, but I feel like once he's gotten more time in the role he could be better. It just wasn't there yet. (And "ouch" about those lines in the beginning. It wasn't anything major but it was really obvious.)
Carlos' voice sounds really painful

The choosing was not...

A challenge to all you In the Heights fans (I agree....no 'fan name' please!)
Show some love for the show and for BCEFA.org by going online to the Gypsy Competition and donate what you can for the IN THE HEIGHTS show team. TOS is up to like $1,000 and that show is closed! Since I can't get to NYC this holiday and I miss all the buckets and the posters and speeches and such, I went online and kicked in a few bucks for the cause.
Dancing, I agree with more experience he could get better, but there was something about Marcus's Benny that was different. I feel he had more of an emotional attraction with Nina (smiling when she spoke and stuff and reacting to her words more). Sometimes I feel like Chris's Benny is more physically attracted to Nina. I also liked how Marcus spoke to Kevin.
I will say that Chris's rapping is superior to Marcus's, but that's a given.
I *JUST* saw a video from the Thanksgiving Day parade and caught my first glimpse of Harriell!Vanessa.
...and I literally squealed and jumped up on my bed, because I was so excited!!! xD
OMG I CAN'T WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS! Watching this show will be the best gift!
And a few other thoughts on the video:
I laughed so hard at "Jeez" and "the box of candy" <3
I still feel that there was something slightly more magical about Karen!Vanessa's long hair brushing Usnavi during "Today's all we got/We cannot stop/This is our block". But Marcy's little hand-in-hair thing was cute too.
Carla got a free piragua!!! =D <3
The audience sitting by Lin = Luckiest people ever! =O :P
The cast must have been freezing =O
And I felt bad about the number of camera switches they had to keep up with...:P But they managed.
I can't say I was too happy with the way it was remixed (The Tony's remix flowed better, this one felt a little too "copy/paste") but I could care less as this was just a parade performance. :P Very well done.
...have I mentioned how excited I am about watching this show? *squeel!*
I saw the Saturday evening 11/29 performance via lottery.
I just wanted to mention that Lin stepped forward and made the BCEFA speech and with his Tony award in hand, offered anyone willing to spend $60 a photo op with him and the Tony award, which the person was allowed to hold, very cool and many people took him up on the offer.
I didnt go for the photo but purchased a cast signed poster instead. Lin was on fire last night, the best I've seen him in the 5 times that I've seen the show.
I also ran into Andrea Burns and Mandy Gonzalez on the subway, the second time this has happened and they thanked me for my donation [poster] and were just very sweet as a whole.
Oh my....finally got to see ITH this weekend. Definitely worth the wait. Loved it!! What an amazing show!!! And as a bonus...got to meet both Lin and Robin before the Macy's Parade! What wonderful talent and incredibly nice guys!

Yay! Congratulations! Truth be told, I think Gypsy should win, but I'm glad they have a very good chance as well.
I was wondering if anyone had an idea about this nagging question I have. Why is Seth (Graffiti Pete) considered a lead and not Eliseo (Piragua Guy)? Eliseo bows with the ensemble and doesn't have an understudy, even though he has a bigger part and two songs of his own. Anyone have an idea on this?
Someone will have to refresh my memory on the bowing order, but I assume you refer to Seth as a "lead" because he bows later than Eliseo does, right?
Well, there are 2 answers to that:
First, logistics. It makes sense to have Graffiti Pete and Sonny take a bow together, since they're established as close friends. And naturally, Sonny gets to bow later than Piragua Guy.
Second, while the parts of Graffiti Pete and Piragua Guy are both secondary, Graffiti Pete actually intervenes in the main plot, whereas Piragua Guy does not. Pete is, after all, the guy who does the Abuela Claudia graffiti at the end. Piragua Guy has songs of his own, but he doesn't really interact with the other characters (save for selling them piraguas, and drinks at the bar, if you go by the theory that the bartender and the Piragua Guy are the same dude, which I personally choose to believe). Pete is actually a part of the action, and the character's lives. And as such, he could, theoretically at least, be seen as a more "major" character to the story, if not necessarily more memorable to the audience.
Seth is a lead as in the actual billing of the show- there's the 11 leads (Andrea, Janet, Robin, Carlos, Mandy, Karen/Marcy, Chris, Priscilla, Olga, Lin, Seth), and then everyone else is ensemble- it's the way they're billed out on the signage, in the Playbill, the leads are the ones who are announced and sign at the cd signings, etc.
The bow order: - female ensemble - male ensemble - Piragua Guy - Graffiti Pete and Sonny step out together, first GP bows, then Sonny bows - etc...
So Piragua Guy gets his own ensemble bow, I guess is the way to put it?
Well, it sort of makes sense, since Piragua Guy doesn't actually partake in the action of the play, whereas Graffiti Pete does. Piragua Guy is really part of the ensemble, not a character who gets involved in the story. So while Piragua Guy is more memorable and gets his own song(s), Pete actually contributes to the story. Sonny doesn't get his own song either, and is without a doubt one of the lead characters.
But I do agree that the bow order is a bit wonky. Sonny should get his own, and much later than he does. But, whatever, not a big deal.
I've thought from the beginning that Sonny should totally bow after Carla, but before Daniela, but it makes even less sense to split up the Carla/Daniela bow together than it does to split up Graffiti Pete/Sonny. :)
bumping to ask if anyone here caught Shaun Taylor-Corbett on as Sonny last night? Would love to hear about it if you were there. Updated On: 12/6/08 at 12:34 PM
