I'm sorry, but the performance that I saw CZJ give in the theater was not that far from what I saw tonight.
Too much meaningless (distracting, even) head movement, not enough meaningful interpretation of some of Sondheim's best (and most famous) music and lyrics.
"We don't value the lily less for not being made of flint and built to last. Life's bounty is in it's flow, later is too late. Where is the song when it's been sung, the dance when it's been danced? It's only we humans who want to own the future too."
- Tom Stoppard, Shipwreck
Yes, I admit I am blaming "the sound guy" whose fault it MAY NOT be. However, for the same exact issues to be happening two years in a row brings up a lot of questions. You would think management would want to make sure that, after last year, viewers could HEAR this year.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

So if the excuse for CZJ's performance is that it's an abbreviated, out of context performance, how come Christiane Noll entered the song halfway through at the climax and still nailed it?
I really liked the clips of the plays. Very well done.
Yay Fences!

Wanting life but never
knowing how
Viola has done stage before. anyway, both she and Denzel deserved these. brilliance!!! enough of this Hollywood crap. their performances were amazing. i guess they knew what they were doing putting Viola up for best and not featured.
i was hoping for a featured actor win for it as well, i was happy about the choice.
