How well can you hear the show from just 'walking by'? It's interesting to think people could just stand outside and listen, lol.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I sat on benches that were part of the theatre BUT even if they chase you from there I'm sure you could still hear it from the Public benches which are a little farther away.
@DailyActor RT @SimsJames: Intermission at INTO THE WOODS. Loved watching Stephen Sondheim crack up at Donna Murphy. Strong first preview!
@AlisonAlampi This is a very interesting production of into the woods. I'm really into the concept! and OMGGGG Donna Murphy looks so fantastic!!
@jonj0nkwiakwia Into the Woods is phenomenal totally the best production. Maybe even the most inventive stage and costumes I've ever seen. Go see it.
@NestorLaraBaeza Into the Woods, intermission
@mrtylermartins Donna Murphy is taking NO PRISONERS. Jessie Mueller is radiant. Sarah Stiles is a scene-stealer. Amy Adams is heartbreaking. #IntoTheWoods
@dramakim Amy Adams is TINY you guys! #intothewoods
@ktflood Just fyi Into the Woods in the park ppl, we got there at about 5.30 for standby & missed out by about 20-30 ppl. #intothewoods
Matt Rogers, are you insane? What an odd response. Obviously the quality of sound can be obstructed by objects, air particles (through distance, wind), reverberation etc. I do think it is a useful question to ask whether standing outside the theater and listening IS the same as being "fifth row center", as you apparently claimed it is. Apparently you have an issue comprehending language because no sarcasm was intended.
(To be clear, he has deleted his post I am responding to, it seems).

How the hell are you people getting away with taking these pictures? When I was at HAIR, I tried to snap a picture of the set during intermission, and ten ushers literally swarmed. I was escorted out of the theatre and was not let back in until a security guared watched me dcelete the photo.

I was more "lingering" than walking by. When you've got two dogs with you it's easy to look like you're on a walk. I'd say it still sounded rap-like, but could you imagine it having someone beatboxing behind it? No.
There's also a quiet clearing behind the theatre on the steps up to Belvedere Castle. That's where I tend to stop to listen for a bit. Nowhere near as crowded there as it is down around the theatre.
Morgan James tweeted, "Question: HOW can you f-ck up "into the woods"?? I fear musicianship is dead in musical theatre. And acting, for that matter. #horrified"
