I had the opposite opinion: I was more impressed with Grande than Erivo. I found Erivo's choices very safe. It probably didn't help that my expectations for Grande were fairly low.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
After finishing Emilia Pérez, Zoe is def taking “some” awards and hoping Ariana takes some home also but Zoe as best featured actress? Nope ! She should def be in the lead

We care only in terms of Oscar predictions, right?"
The Globes also overhauled their voting body, among other things in response to the controversy. That said, nominating Pamela Anderson instead of Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Selena Gomez and Isabella Rossellini instead of Danielle Deadwyler, and snubbing Sing Sing outside of Colman Domingo all feel like classic Globes moves.

I totally agree and have been trying to come up with the word for Erivo's performance. Safe. It hit me during "The Wizard and I". It was supposed to be a joyful moment for Elphaba and I just wasn't feeling it. Of, course she sang the heck out of it but her performance as a whole was fine but did not feel award worthy to me.(And maybe it was a directorial choice) Grande's did, and I predicted she would get a Golden Globe nomination, which she truly deserves in my opinion. I will be shocked if Erivo wins (I expect Demi Moore will take it). I do expect Grande to win. We will see! JMO
To be fair, I didn't feel that the staging (or whatever you call it for a film) for Wizard and I really helped her that much. It seemed mostly just there to show off more of the set until she ran through the wheat field (which also seemed a little random?), and felt more like a music video than a character moment.
I thought Ariana Grande had a more dynamic performance, but that's also part of the role itself, and I actually felt that Cynthia Erivo was the one that benefitted more in the shared scenes.

Mikey Madison is my bet. She's in what might be the Best Picture frontrunner.

I feel this also has something to do with the crazy amount of editing and autotune on her voice. It sounds really "tinny", it sucks the life out of it a bit. They didn't do nearly as much on Ariana's voice. It makes it sound a bit robotic, contained and safe.
The contrast between the things that were recorded live on set and the studio vocals was also too big I think, I love that they made the cuts, studio tracks work better as they always sound more perfect, but they could have made the difference a little less obvious. Another moment where this was too obvious was in Defying Gravity with the "it's me" line. It should be an explosion of a note, now it sounded autotuned, tinny, contained and therefore "safe".

Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Comedy/Musical (Cynthia Erivo) Best Supporting Actress in any Motion Picture (Ariana Grande)"
Glinda is a lead role. Nessa, Boq, Fiyero are supporting.
And why is there a special musical actress award? It feels a bit like they are handing out the nominations in strategic and creative way so they don't overlap.

The Golden Globes always separate out drama from musical/comedy (which are combined). It's led to some fun placements like Les Miz in the musical/comedy category

Yes, but if both Grande and Erivo were nominated for Best Actress, the votes for each would cancel each other out. And if one of these roles is going to be slotted into Best Actress rather Best Supporting Actress, that would clearly be Glinda.
I feel like I’m watching people figure out awards season in real time in this thread.
Category fraud has always been a thing (hell, Kate Winslet won Best Actress for a supporting role, when she actually had one of her finest performances of all time the same year - that was a real lead!).
It had been a long time since I’ve seen that awful movie, but I do remember most expecting she would be supporting (I think she was at the Globes, and then Lead for the Oscars). Unless I’m mistaken, I have had a rough day today lol
This message board is as ridiculous as ever, Theatre just scored a big win with the Wicked movie, the majority thinks they pulled it off with style, the lead women (both women who have done theatre) get nominated for awards, the box office is great.
Broadway World is like 'but nobody takes these awards seriously'
Some people must just sit in a cloud of bitterness, it's sad.
And no, I'm not a Wicked fan, thought the film did a great job.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
The Golden Globes are pretty widely not taken particularly seriously, even within the industry. This is not news. They’re the “fun” awards but they’re not useful as Oscar precursors due to the category splits and the extremely small and unrepresentative voting pool (and, yknow, the years and years of starf*ckery and corruption, going back to the 50s!)
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
The one thing the Golden Globes can do for the Oscar race is help build a narrative and momentum. True, there’s not much overlap otherwise but at least it keeps your name or film in the conversation.

The vocal mixing had nothing to do with it for me. It was just her overall performance.
Saw it again on Sunday and it's still an amazing 10 out of 10 movie musical adaptation to me. The second viewing also made me appreciate the easter eggs and cameos a lot more. Still don't know what some critics are complaining about the grey/washed-out look of the movie (maybe the times I watched it was in an amazingly good quality movie theater so they may have had really good projectors) but the lens flares/glares complaint is perfectly understandable. The colors on display were vibrant and popped up very well.
Cynthia and Ariana were born to play these roles, and to see the two of them get these award nominations for their talents makes me so happy to see. Hollywood needs to take notes as to how not just to do a great movie musical, but a perfect 1st part movie that knows how to edit and pace itself. This is the best part 1 film we've had since Fellowship of the Ring. I'm not kidding.
