--Joe Mantello is a brilliant actor and an extremely overrated director. He should go back to acting full time. --Brian Bedford's production of THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST bored me to tears, and his performance was more camp than actual acting. (Sauja, I'm guessing this will fall into your WHAT???? category) --Lauren Graham was good as Miss Adelaide. Was it the greatest musical theatre performance ever? No. Was it respectable? Absolutely. --Yasmina Reza's plays a vapid and stupid. --I was more captivated by Susan Sarandon than Geoffrey Rush in EXIT THE KING. --Chris Rock gave the best performance in THE MOTHERF*CKER WITH THE HAT.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

I enjoyed the replacement cast of Next to Normal far more than the OBC.
I also found Priscilla to be dull and hardly funny or amusing in the least.
And this isn't so much an 'unpopular opinion', but I was so torn on whether or not I wanted Norbert Leo Butz or Andrew Rannells to win the Tony. TORN, I tell you.
I agree that Marin Mazzie was vastly superior to Alice Ripley. It was nice to have someone who could actually act and sing the role.

littlegreen2, as much as I disagree with most of your opinions, I have to thank you for calling out Emma Hunton's performance. Next to Normal is in Toronto right now, and everyone I know who's gone is saying she stole the show, when I found her to have moments that were great, but overall she was VERY overdone. Too much angst, too weepy...I lost the realness of the character.
Give me a bottle of bourbon and half a chicken and I'll conquer the world!
-I happen to love Lea Michele. I think she is phenomenal -I don't know if I hated Avenue Q or Hairspray more (and Avenue Q didn't deserve all the Tonys...that should have been Caroline's year) -I'm completely annoyed by musicals with drag queens (Priscilla, La Cage, and Taboo to be exact) -I think Into the Woods is Sondheim's best work and I think the Regent's Revival with Hannah Waddingham is far superior to any other productions (and it should transfer to broadway)
Well I find Wicked to be a mildly entertaining show, I think it is a terrible piece of musical theatre. I think The Scarlet Pimpernel has an absolutely stunning score. I can't stand Alice Ripley. I love Billy Elliot. I found the Scottsboro Boys boring.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
AC126748, I have to second Sauja's comment: I don't agree with all of your opinions, but I appreciate that you've posted some that are actually provoking a response in me.
My unpopular opinion is that Bernadette Peters' voice hasn't aged well at all.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.

- I think Bernadette Peters sounds like a baby. - Ahrens and Flaherty are two of the most talented songwriters working today. - Angela Lansbury is bafflingly overrated. - Taboo's score more than makes up for its other failings.

I was very disappointed because I heard amazing things before I saw her. In Providence, her performance was very weak. I was unimpressed and I haven't been able to shake that. I've seen her 5 or 6 times since then and most of the performances have been better, but she is still hard to watch because I can't figure out how she wants to play Natalie. Sometimes she's angry as all hell and other times she weeps until she can't breathe. It's great that she explore but I don't like that I've seen her so many times and I still don't know what to expect.
Emma over-does it, and Jenn didn't give enough to the characer - Meghann Fahy is easily the best Natalie.
Also, another unpopular opinion - Mackenzie Mauzy was fantastic for her first few performances as Natalie in Next to Normal. SO MUCH TALENT.
"I will not cease from mental fight, nor shall my sword sleep in my hand: Till we have built Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land."
I don't think Amy Whinehouse should be all over the latest headlines and the main message board since this is www.BROADWAYworld.com last time I checked.
I loved CTZ in A little night music I think Glee is stupid I love Phantom of the Opera I HATE pretty much everything by Ahrens and Flaherty (but mostly Once on this Island) Wicked is fun, but overrated Rent is annoying and is completely overrated, it is not the greatest most superior piece of musical theatre I have ever seen. Alice Ripley was just ok in next to normal (mainly because her voice was shot, which detracted from her performance for me) I love Beauty and the Beast I thought the revival of Promises Promises was wonderful, a very fun night at the theatre
That "The Book of Mormon" music and lyrics, while entertaining, are so full of theft, mimicry, and sloppy writing they travel from "clever homage" to "we don't really know what to do to be actually original".
I dislike Neil Patrick Harris at all I think Idina and Josh Groban in the Chess Concert were extrenely painful to hear I love Frank Wildhorn musicals. All of them I think Hugh Jackman should stay away from musicals
Tateh, I don't care for Neil Patrick Harris, either. I don't get his "appeal."
I also think "color-blind casting" is nonsense. I see it as a, "look how P.C. and open minded we are...we're not going to write anything new, fresh, and original...we're just going to take classic pieces of work and put black actors in because we're SO HIP." It's one-sided, doesn't add anything to existing pieces, and my opinion on this gives people the impression that I, myself, am a racist, which just makes me giggle uncontrollably.
Adam Pascal's voice makes my ear drums hurt.
I was never a fan of Sutton Foster until watching her performance of "Anything Goes" at the Tony Awards.
"Ave. Q," winning Best Musical was nonsense. It was the Tonys way of saying, "Look at how current we are! We know how to be trendy and cool...vulgarity doesn't offend us!" "Caroline, or Change" was greatly overlooked and underrated.
Natasha Richardson, may she rest in peace, wasn't all that great in "Cabaret."
I think the Book of Mormon is the best thing to land on the Broadway stage. I loved Avenue Q. I don't understand why people here seem to think it's overrated. I don't think Oscar Hammerstein II was that great of a lyricist. However, I don't think any man/woman has had a bigger impact on musical theater (as a form) than he had. Richard Rodgers' music is better than Sondheim's. Bernstein's music is better than Sondheim's. George Gerhswin's music is better than Sondheim's.* I love Jersey Boys. And Mamma Mia. It's good to finally get that off my chest.
*I do however think that no one can surpass Sondheim's work once the lyrics are introduced to the music. I mean the synergy between his music and lyrics is just mind-blowing for me.
