It's the internet. For it to be pathetic it would have to be consequential.
Ladyofthelake, you were being sarcastic? Were you trying to be funny as well? If you were, I understand why you like the CD of Spamalot.
I mean, Zenachick, I have to ask. Do you find the content of the songs surprising? After the first verse. After you read the title of the song. Are you really surprised and entertained by the forthcoming jokes?
I'm standing on your toes?! It wasn't even funny the first time.
Roninjoey, I care not at all about your opinion of my sense of humor. What I care about more is your compulsion to be needlessly rude and insulting. Just because "it's the internet," it doesn't mean there aren't people on the other side of the screen. If you wouldn't walk up to strangers on the street and tell them they have a lame and childish sense of humor, and no taste in music, if you heard them talk about enjoying Spamalot or its cast recording, I don't know why you - or anyone else - finds it to be perfectly acceptable behavior online. I don't care how common it is; that doesn't make it desirable or right.
If you would walk up to a stranger and say those things, I'll just be grateful you most likely don't live in my neck of the woods - and wouldn't recognize me if you did.
And before you tell me I should stay off this board, or the Internet in general, if I can't "take it," I should assure you that nothing you said will make me lose a moment's sleep tonight. That isn't the point.
While the Tony judges are required to see the nominated shows, the same cannot be enforced of the Grammy committee. After actually having it explained to me years ago by an actual voter, there is no way that the voters can (or will) listen to every nominee. Spamalot was on a mainstream label (Sony) and has more word of mouth. This clearly accounts for the win. I was surprised to even see it nominated, actually. The other 4 recordings are so overwhelmingly better, it's really a crime. Sorry sh-k-boom.
I'm not sure what actually goes into deciding what the Best Musical Show Album is. Is it the recording quality? The quality of the score? The quality of the performances? I can't seem to find the information anywhere.
BUT if it has to do with the artistry of those who created the music (be is the composer(s), lyricist(s), performers or all three), this award should have gone to Piazza. Or ANYONE but Spamalot. Spamalot is fun. It's entertaining. It's a pleasure to listen to . . . in moderation. But it's NOT some magnificent work of musical art that deserves the recignition of a Grammy. Piazza is one of the most beautiful and complete scores to grace the theatre world with it's presence in a very long time. Spamalot, by comparison, is trite, muddled, and confused -- perhaps by intention, but that doesn't make it a work of art.
If the award has to do with the quality of the recording itself . . . well, I don't know anything about that, but I would assume the award should go to Spamalot, since it has an absurd amount of money to spend and it's with a more major record label that has more experience and money to make the recording sound as great as possible.
I have long since given up on the Grammy's. I would explain my reasons in full, but that would take to long. The short of it: The voters tend to look backwards instead of foreward. The result -- a collective of people with krinks in their neck and no idea what's REALLY going on in the world of music.
I'm glad it won too! I saw DRS and while I enjoyed it I didn't have the desire to buy the cd. I also liked Bee but I preferred the book to the music. I listen to my Spamalot CD all the time and am glad it won.
I wonder if they will change the lyrics once again to Diva's Lament as the orginal line was I've no grammy, no rewards I've no Tony awards.
They already changed the line about the Tony Awards (well, at least when Sara Ramirez was on). She references having won a Tony.
Anyway, the Grammys are, and always have been, a bastion for mediocrity. It's no surprise they would honor the more "mainstream" musical, instead of the one that truly deserved it (Piazza, hands down).
Actually they recently changed it back to all our Tony awards won't keep me out of Betty Fords.....but I thought they might now change it to our Grammy award won't keep me out of Betty Fords.
The Grammy for Best Musical Show Album is shared by the Producer and Composer and Lyricist. This would indicate that the best score will not always win...a well produced album is also recognized. I think the Spamalot cd is very well produced and listen to it more than The Producers (which also won the Grammy.) I would've rather seen Piazza or Bee win because I think they are also well produced and better scores.
BTW, Galt McDermott and Gerome Ragni already won for the score of Hair in 1968.
"Carson has combined his passion for helping children with his love for one of Cincinnati's favorite past times - cornhole - to create a unique and exciting event perfect for a corporate outing, entertaining clients or family fun."
I fear I must rear my head again. Why are you all getting so up in arms about this? OF COURSE Spamalot won the Grammy. How many times did I TRY to educate this board about the difference bt the REAL entertainment business and Broadway? The people who nominate and vote for the Grammys(and I know many)are predominantly in the thick of the music business. It's not like the Tonys where people in professions such as Dentistry, can decide the fate of the Tony's. The screening process is very difficult. You have to actually have something to do with the business of making records to qualify. Spamalot won because it's the only show that people outside of message boards are fully aware of. Simple as that. It has nothing to do with sales. It has to do with all of the many things I've said, ad nauseum, about the disparity between the real world and Broadwayworld. Correct, however Grammy voters are given unlimited access for 90 days to an online service and we can download as much of the nominated music as we care to listen to. It's actually a nice perk -- because I'd NEVER buy most of the crap that's nomintaed in some categories. But it's interesting to hear what people seem to like.
It's also interesting to know that many people only know an artist's "single" or radio version -- which oftentimes is a re-mixed, re-arranged, new performance, with a hired-gun producer, that has NOTHING in common with the album version of said recording.
The Grammys will never recognize the kind of Broadway that some of you like... yes, it is political, but then again, if it were truly about sales or even record company juice, U2 would not have won. The voters are still the people who make records (unlike the Tony voters, who are primarily producers and related business people). The Recording Academy is comprised of the people who actually make the records. Can't say that for the Tony voters.
How do I qualify to become a Voting member? You need to have creative or technical credit on a minimum of six tracks (or their equivalent) in at least one voting discipline and the album must have been commercially released in the United States. Qualifying tracks can be on one album or a combination of albums. In the music video and craft categories you must have at least six commercial or promotional videos/albums released in the United States.
Who does not qualify as a Voting member? Applicants who are credited as Executive Producer, Assistant Producer, A&R, and Production Coordinators are examples of non-voting categories. If you think you might not qualify, call Member Services at 310.392.3777 or your local chapter to discuss your questions.

One final thought -- record companies are not allowed to pay the membership fees - and ballots can only be sent to the voter's home address. To say that the labels conspire to vote a block for their artist is BS. However, if I'm in a tossup and I can choose between an artists on an affiliated label vs. non-affiliated, I will keep it in the family. That's human nature (protect your friends).
Wouldn't it be interesting if ACTORS and MUSICIANS and CREW were afforded the opportunity to vote for Tony awards?
arrrgh. another reason for me to not like this so much. why oh why? and while im on my rant, was the only reason this won best musical because voters thought it would be the most financially successful on and off bway? that's sad.
Don't f*ck with me fellas. This ain't my first time at the rodeo.
