lol yes probably. She is doing amazing work but it's important to remember this is her second broadway show. She'll win eventually! Also not sure it's 100% going to Daniel Fish because it's still a divisive revival...
Fish vs, Chavkin is a race to watch. Chavkin gets points for contributing to the development of the piece and her last show on Broadway. But Fish, I believe has the edge for being edgier and taking some giant risks. I predict a nail biter with Fish crossing the finish line first this time.
So what are we thinking for Leading Actress in a Musical nominations?
Presumably, Stephanie J Block and Beth Leavel. Kelli will get one too, I imagine (I wasn't a huge fan, but I still think she'll get the nomination).
Then we have Eva Noblezada (highly acclaimed production, well received performance, noted that the character is weak), Sophia Anne Caruso (one of the strongest parts of a show that will likely not get much critical acclaim, though I had a lot of fun), and Rebecca Naomi Jones (giving a polarizing performance in a polarizing production).
I would give the last 2 slots to Noblezada and Caruso. Curious as to what other people who have seen these shows think?
Crazy to think we’re discussing someone is edgier than Chavkin, who has singlehandedly turned quite impossible shows on paper and heralded them to such success. Also, this is Fish’s Broadway debut, so it’s not like he’s more overdue than Chavkin. I think she has the edge since Hadestown is bound to win multiple Tonys in addition to Best Musical.

Agreed. I’ve seen too many years where the momentum of a strong Best Musical contender becomes an avalanche of wins and this seems like one of the likeliest categories to benefit from Hadestown’s strong showing on awards night.
I agree Chavkin's past would have had me believe she was as "edgy" as you can get, but HADESTOWN is an excellent solid, safe musical with an innocent juvenile, a lovely ingenue, a secondary couple, (villain and comedienne with a heart)and a sleezy, friendly narrator. She does a wonderful job of bringing it all together. But Fish outdoes her with flying boots, a crazy dream ballet and lots of blood. It will be interesting to see which way voters go. A wave of wins for HADESTOWN will definitely help Chavkin.
Director of a Musical is the biggest nail-biter of the season. Hadestown will def win Musical, Score, 1-2 acting awards, and 1-3 design awards. Oklahoma’s only award of the night could very well be Best Revival. Or, it could go home with 4 (Stroker, Director, Orchestrations, Revival).
I would give Chavkin the edge because I think Tony voters will admire Oklahoma more than they’ll truly love it...if that makes sense. Hadestown is an imperfect musical (the Book has weaknesses), but Chavkin has turned it into a GREAT piece of theatre. There’s also the “woke” factor of her being only the 11th woman to win a Tony for directing a play or musical (and she came close to winning for Comet).
Of course, if they truly love Oklahoma, Fish deserves all the credit for making it what it is. So it’s really a tough category.
According to GoldDerby, Stephanie Hsu might have a shot for a nomination for Featured Actress, which would be a pleasant surprise. Love her!
My predictions for the nominations for the Best Musical and the acting categories:
BEST MUSICAL
Hadestown Tootsie The Prom The Cher Show Be More Chill
BEST LEADING ACTRESS
Stephanie J. Block (The Cher Show) Kelli O’Hara (Kiss Me Kate) Eva Noblezada (Hadestown) Sophia Anne Caruso (Beetlejuice) Beth Leavel (The Prom)
SHOULD BE NOMINATED: Samantha Barks (Pretty Woman). I feel awful for her.
BEST LEADING ACTOR:
Santino Fontana (Tootsie) Damon Daruso (Oklahoma) Will Chase (Kiss Me Kate) Brook Ashmanskas (The Prom) Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice)/AIN’T BE TOO PROUD cast member
BEST FEATURED ACTRESS:
Ali Stroker (Oklahoma) Stephanie Styles (Kiss Me Kate)/Mary Testa (Oklahoma) Amber Grey (Hadestown) Lesli Kritzer (Beetlejuice) Sarah Stiles (Tootsie)
COULD BE NOMINATED: Micaela Diamond (The Cher Show)
BEST FEATURED ACTOR:
Corbin Bleu (Kiss Me Kate)/AIN’T BE TOO PROUD cast member Patrick Page (Hadestown) Andre De Shields (Hadestown) Patrick Vaill (Oklahoma) George Salazar (Be More Chill)

Unfortunately, what I've heard is that it's good, and Nathan Lane does a great job, but this year has an incredibly strong lineup for straight plays and it just doesn't make the cut into that upper echelon. I, personally, would give it the award for Best Costuming, because Ann Roth is amazing and off the top of my head I can't think of any other straight plays that come close to that level of aesthetic. But I doubt it will get much recognition for the bigger categories.
What are we thinking for best book in terms of nominations and winner? I think the big three new musicals from this season will get in, but I’m not sure who will take it. Hadestown’s book is probably the least great part of the production as it got very repetitive and is forgettable compared to the amazing acting, score, and scenic design. I have also seen people say The Prom but I’m unsure just because it would be the only award I think The Prom could actually win. For Tootsie I thought the jokes were good but there are some major flaws like the ending which many did not enjoy. I think Be More Chill and Ain’t Too Proud will also get in simply because we need 5 nominees.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Scott Rudin always gets a lot of noms, but this year he’ll likely be responsible for the ENTIRE category (7 possibilities: Celia, Julie White, Joan Allen, Ruth Wilson, LaTanya, Erin Wilhelmina, Elizabeth Marvel). I can’t think of others who could crack that list?
COSTUME DESIGN OF A PLAY: Ann Roth gets 3-4 out of 5 noms, and only her second win (at 87).
BOOK: probably goes to TOOTSIE, unless voters really love THE PROM (which would be Prom’s only win). HADESTOWN has a lot of criticisms for its 2nd act structure, which falls on the bookwriter. (And Mitchell will still win for Score.) Ain’t too Proud and either BMC or BJ fill out the rest of the category.
PLAY REVIVAL: I can envision a lot of the campaign becoming “honor the play, honor the writer” — this would be Kenny Lonnergan’s first Tony in an illustrious career; it would also be Harvey’s 5th. It’s a weak year with no consensus pick right now, but I give Waverly the edge.
After the reviews and new advertising campaign, I'm going to echo my theory from a few weeks ago: Lithgow will be petitioned to Featured Actor, where he stands a good chance of winning.

Even though he's onstage for basically the whole show, John Lithgow does kind of feel like a supporting actor in the show. I think that's where he should be. He stands a very good chance at a winning there too.
That is a load of crap re: Lithgow as supporting. The show is called Hillary and Clinton. He is playing Clinton and is above title! He is the Lead Male Actor in that play, unequivocally. He is in the play for 80% and barely leaves until the end. There are two featured male actors that qualify for featured in that play.
It’s incredibly unfair to the real featured actors in the countless other shows when the supporting roles are filled with CELEBRITIES from LEADING roles. There needs to be room to reward the featured actors who make their staple in sometimes only 2-3 scenes. The Drama League and broadway community need to stand up for this legitimate concern so the lifelong theater actors get the due they deserve.

100% agreed.
"There’s nothing quite like the power and the passion of Broadway music. "
John Lithgow is a lifelong theatre actor and he is supporting to Hillary's story. Even when he is onstage the focus tends to be on Hillary. He does feel supporting rather than lead.
The award is best “featured” actor. First, it is the story of their combined marriage, and second you can still support another actor and be a lead actor. By y’all’s logic Eddie Izard should be supporting next year because metcalf’s role will be the center of the show. It’s a better argument to put Paddy Comsidine in supporting than Lithgow.
Compare Clinton’s role to Obama’s role in the play and realize the glaring difference between lead and featured.
