Anthony -
Thanks for all the filming info!
This fall, I played Seymour in our high school production of LS and our cast went to see you in Dallas. (I love this show!) I was wondering if you had any fun stories or mishaps with the show/lyrics/Audrey IIs...and which is your favorite Pod (mine is definately Pod 2, although ours was pretty ghetto).
Also, concerning Rent, I haven't really heard yet Chris' reasoning for setting the film in the 80s...any particular reason? (it IS originally in the 90s, right? or am I totally wrong on that?)
Last question---I've read that Chris is bringing in the topic of gay marriage, unless that has changed. I didn't initially like this too much, because to me, it does not matter...it isn't part of the message of the show, in fact, in my opinion, the homosexuality in Rent is accepted by pretty much all the characters and not really an issue...it just is, love is what it is, so why make it an issue in the movie (especially one that may drive away certain viewers, who could otherwise fall in love with the message). Any thoughts on the subject?
sorry for ranting!
I have to say when I met Anthony at Little Shop in Portland Oregon I was amazed at how genuinly nice they guy is. He signed an autograph for me and my best Friend and even wrote "Happy Birthday" to my friend because it was on his present.
Anthony ~ How would be the best way to send you letters and gifts ect. You deserve more than I could send you but It would be nice to be able to say thank you for everything you have done.
that's great you got to meet Anthony. I think it's so much fun to meet stars on Broadway because they are a lot more genuine, and they have hardcore fans from everywhere. I hope I get a chance to meet the entire RENT cast, that would be one of my dreams coming true... it's up there with meeting Josh Groban, the Lord of the Rings cast, RENT cast, Hugh Jackman, & Lea 10th les mis...
I think it will be so much fun to watch teh RENT movie, because I never got a chance to see the originals... I listen to the CD all the time, but it's not the same thing...

There is a scarf! Fantastic. :)
Anthony -- I was wondering if you would be able to answer a few questions for me as a "primary source" (haha) for my history term paper. I'm going to be writing about changing social views in America and how American musical theatre in the 20th and 21st centuries has reflected them (and what we can learn from studying the changes in musical theatre). Is there an email address to which I can send these questions? Or would you rather that I simply posted them here? You can reach me at shatterglass @ gmail . com (without the spaces, of course). Thank you so much, and good luck on the set!
Annie
ANTHONY I LOVE YOU! :)
It seems like just yesterday I started a website about a show that opened up at NYTW and transferred to Broadway. Little did I know how much fun (and hard work), how many people I would get to meet, and how rewarding it was to spread the message of RENT around the world.
I'm glad to see the film is now a reality. I wish you and all (well a majority-I wish Fredi was with ya) the rest of the OBC the best-enjoy the moment and have fun. You guys were and will always be numero uno in my books!

Jimbo - your website was a haven for me when I was in college, discovering RENT for the first time.
The NYTW version was extremely interesting. :-P This is for anyone, but which version did you prefer? The NYTW version or the broadway/current version? I have to say that I liked alot of the songs from NYTW like "You'll Get Over It" and that version of the RENT song was indeed interesting but to be honest I'm glad Right Brain was replaced by Glory, big time. Any thoughts?
i like aspects from both but i guess i like the current version more. I agree about right brain. It is so hard to listen too! same goes for female to female. man the horror!

is there any recording of the NYTW version? if not official, which i doubt since i've never heard of one, or on some website, maybe?
Right Brain just kind of scared me a little. :-P And RENT (the song) was just randomly gory. But I liked Mimi's solos in Another Day and the fact that Maureen and Joanne had slightly larger roles but in the end I'd have to go with the current version.

I don't know the songs either msutton. Does someone have them?
Question for the diehard renthead (or Anthony even):
Sherie Rene sings a song called "Love Heals" on her solo CD by Jonathan Larson,
Was that song from the NYTW version?
msutton... I PMed you about it...
(sorry for the threadjack... )
Ummm...I dont think that's from the NYTW version according to the transcript I have but I'll check again...
A quick question: Whenever you are back in New York, have you ever been inclined to go see RENT while you weren't performing in it? Would it be weird to just be another audience member and watch other people onstage in a role that you originated after spending such a long period of time in close involvement with the production of the show? Just curious.

Hey all --
I wrote this last night, and tried to post it then, but the BWW server was down, or something, so here it is now:
I just got home from a long great cold day on the set, and I'm a bit wiped out, but wanted to share a couple of nice moments...
The first part of the day was spent with the homeless woman chewing me out for trying to film her, and that was the coldest part of the day as well. But we got everything done and it went well, and Aisha de Haas, who was in the Broadway company for a while after I left the show, did a great job. I had a couple of friends stop by, so it was fun to share a little bit of the experience with them. Neither of them had been to a movie set before, and while they shivered a great deal, they still had fun.
After dinner, and after darkness set in, I had one of the most thrilling moments I've ever experienced, singing a good chunk of What You Own while walking down a New York City street (East 7th Street, to be exact). My journey with Rent has taken me so incredibly far, and amazingly it has all led me there in that moment, singing my heart out for a film that will preserve all of our work forever. I don't feel like I'm doing it justice, and it's sort of hard to articulate, but I felt so at home, as I always have singing Jonathan's songs from this show, and to get to do it in this context was just overwhelming.
A nice bonus today was getting to meet a couple of the folks who have frequented this board. Thanks for coming by and being so kind and gracious while I was freezing my butt off.
I'm going to have a nice weekend off now, so I'm not sure if I will get back here before the next day of shooting, which is Monday. Have a great couple of days. And thanks again for all of your interest and support. It really means a lot.
Take care --
Anthony

Thanks Anthony! That was so nice of you to tell us what has been going on on the set. I really love Rent and can't wait for the movie to come out, especially hearing the way you are putting your effort and emotion into it. Again, thanks for the post. I love hearing what you have to say!!
I can just imagine how surreal this all must be. I mean it is for *me* reading about it. To actually be doing it? Wow.
I was wondering if you guys have any idea what role you will play on the marketing end of it (i.e. talk shows). I know its far off and right now your main concerns are getting through each day on the set - doing everything justice AND keeping warm. But is anything planned for promoting the movie?
I started thinking about this when I was watching TV (some late night talk show) and an actor was talking about a current project thats being filmed now.
Really TheGaIsSilent? Wow, that's great to know....I have it backed up-maybe some day I'll put it back up. I have everything boxed away including photos, articles, interviews, film clips etc..it was definitely a great experience am I'm glad you had fun with it!
Anthony, I had an amazing time yesterday and I just wanted to thank you for being so generous and taking time out of your thawing to talk to us! All of the scenes, especially "What You Own," looked incredible, and I am so excited to see the finished film! I hope next week isn't quite so cold...but in any case, you get to go back to sunny CA soon. Good luck with the rest of the shoot, and thanks again!

Anthony,
It was an absolute pleasure to meet you yesterday, and wonderful to see everybody else as well. Thanks for chatting with us, introducing us to the others, etc. I don't think it's an experience I'm ever going to forget. Sorry we couldn't catch up with you again before we left, though.
Everything looks and sounds incredible - I'm definitely getting excited. Stay warm, and best of luck to all of you.

thanks for all the info Anthony. man, i wish i could be there, but i live in Virginia and i doubt my parents would let me go all the way to New York to see you at the others. i don't know why. sorry that you're freezin over there, but at least you're having a blast and meeting the cool people on this thread. keep up the great work.
I must ask this, I really can't resist. Because of the cold weather and the filming of the movie, it made me think.
How many scarfs have you recieved from fans over the years that loved you from Rent?
(I apologize if this was asked).
Thanks once again for keeping us up to date about the movie. I feel like we're getting behind the scene sneak previews of the movie before everyone else. I'm so excited. Now more than ever. The shooting of the film just brings it so much closer to the movie.
Emcee, you're a lucky girl....
