PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - even the daily critics were less harsh on this show than others.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Cats and Wicked.

I enjoyed Wicked IMMENSELY, but it is NOT the end-all be-all of musical theatre that many of its hardcore fans believe it to be.

Hairspray. I didn't like Cats either, but I didn't honestly expect to with what I knew about it going in.

I thought I was going to really like Hairspray, but most of the score is just blah (I like maybe three songs -- Good Morning, Baltimore, Welcome to the Sixties, and I Can Hear the Bells), and it's really not that funny. I sat through most of the first act bored - pretty much the only part I liked in the whole thing was "You're Timeless To Me" because Bruce Villanch - and whoever I saw as the father - were adlibbing like crazy.

Hairspray and some of Spamalot.
And the other thing about the Phantom Lady was, Bert, she realized, in the city that never sleeps... What did she realize, Kitten? That all the songs she'd listened to, all the love songs, that they were only songs. What's wrong with that? Nothing, if you don't believe in them. But she did, you see. She believed in enchanted evenings, and she believed that a small cloud passed overhead and cried down on a flower bed, and she even believed there was breakfast to be had... Where? On Pluto. The mysterious, icy wastes of Pluto.

Spamalot, Wicked, and Mamma Freakin' Mia!

"I have also met him in person, and I find him to be quite funny actually. Arrogant and often misinformed, but still funny."
