why are we giving credence to this inanity by repeating it? By April 12th, the death and suffering this virus will have wrought in this country will overwhelm anything Cadet Bonespurs tries to say. Even (some) Republican Governors already are distancing themselves from such rubbish … no serious policy-maker believes this can happen. So we all should stop repeating it, unless it's to heap further abuse on the absurdity of it.

i actually see the point you are trying to make, but it will be moot by April 12th.

I think looking to what professional sports leagues are doing may give us some guidance or at least some vague ideas of when things may start turning around. Currently, the NBA, MLB, and NHL are on indefinite hiatus. MLB would like to open up for players in May and start games of some kind—perhaps without fan initially—in June. The NHL wants to resume operations by July, apparently, and hand out the Stanley Cup in September and have a one month off season before starting the 2020-2021 season in November. The NBA seems to be much more in flux, with a cancellation still being possible.

I think all we know is that it would socially irresponsible to encourage or support any plan that would have theaters reopening on April 13. Besides, isn’t the PAUSE order in effect until the 19th or 20th? Pretty sure actors are considered non-essential workers.

I will be honest I can not see Broadway announcing anything new until April. At which time I would assume they would do a blanket til further notice announcement. Truth is. I can’t see them playing or allowing large crowd sizes until October I feel generally speaking they are going want to keep the population of tourists down through the summer to save a possible secondary resurgence. My guess September 26. With Tony awards (of some kind) November 8. In hopes of promoting for the Christmas season.

Unfortunately I do feel that by that time though. Shows like Diana, Girl From The North Country and Company maybe gone.

I'm just curious where you've seen or heard that. From what I've heard, and from what updates have been posted on NHL.com, they're are still weighing a variety of options but are far from deciding anything and ideally, they want whatever they do to be as consistent as possible with what other sports leagues do especially the NBA. If they finish the playoffs in September and want to start the new season in November, that means they would need October for training camps and preseason games which would mean no offseason at all other than what they're having now of course. I can't imagine the player's union ever agreeing to that or teams ever agreeing to completely forego any sort of training camp which determines at a minimum which rookies and free agents make the team for the upcoming season..

A lot of people are going to want to do a lot of things. Much of it is unlikely to occur on the timetables they prefer. By many indications, we're going to remain in unpredictable circumstances for some time, so predictions of the future will remain unreliable as well.

There was a closed door meeting two days ago with the Broadway League and the earliest a show will be able to begin running again or open was discussed as being mid-July.  Broadway will not have an official date to re-open until restrictions are lifted limiting large groups of people.  It will NOT be up and running by mid-April or mid-May.

@UncleCharlie, this is the last piece I read with a NHL timeline. It’s from TSN and cites the info being from a players group, but it’s actually not that different then some of the very early possible timelines the NHL discussed. The bigger issue now is all the different shelter in place/stay at home/quarantine orders in place in different regions around the country.

Maybe this Monday they will finally announce cancellations through a particular month- with more information coming as things develop- My guess--everything will be cancelled until September 1- with updates coming as they occur.

People have to also realize that if a producer themselves decides to cancel performances they stand to lose more money in whatever insurance they have. They need a mandate from higher up in order to have more protection for those affected.

I don't think the Mayor did a press conference yet today.  He did a TV interview today where he talked about things being closed into May, but that's just one person talking.

Nothing official yet I can find from the Mayor.  Not that he has any power.  Governor extended school closing until April 15 - that is official.

I think people are a little overly optimistic about insurance coverage. While each policy is different,  it won't last indefinitely. Cast, crew, and ushers are being paid for 2 1/2 weeks only. So I imagine that the insurance probably minimizes the shows' losses for about a month or so before it runs out. Unless of course the theater owners waive rent,  and the shows don't have to pay rental fees on lighting and sound equipment (in which case most shows, in theory, would be able to re-open; staying open is a different question).

I know that this is not a direct Broadway comparison, but it's interesting that when China decided to open a small percentage of their movie theaters a few days ago, attendance was almost non-existent and the theaters were closed again the following day. I think that it will be a while before the general public will feel safe about going into theaters of any kind...

Yes, that is the key. That and/or some type of antiviral drug. Until that happens, I think there's going to be too many restrictions (and not to mention general fear from the public)

Until that happens, I think there's going to be too many restrictions (and not to mention general fear from the public.  Yes- I agree with you Mr. W- without a treatment for the Coronas- or a vaccine- very  few people will want to spend time in crowded theaters or restaurants- or concerts or anywhere crowds converge. I have tickets for Music Man in November- and I was counting on going because I assumed by November, things would have calmed down- and they probably will- but will I be willing to get on a crowded plane and fly to the epicenter of the virus- and sit in a packed theater next to God knows who? That is something I am pondering - but the answer is probably not- no show is worth the possibility of getting sick and possibly very sick- or dying.

Once shows are able to open, I do hope that they are still flexible on ticket refunds. Public fear isn't going to go away anytime soon and there are a lot of high risk individuals who will still need to cancel/change existing plans. 

I also foresee masks becoming mainstream in the US until this is fully under control. I saw a post this morning about the CDC potentially giving out new guidance on these in the next week.

I would think July 1st would be a nice time to open Broadway again, but perhaps that is a little too hopeful. I think they will be very flexible on refunds, as everyone has been so far.

Ticketmaster will not give me a refund for Lehman Trilogy unless it is cancelled. Which it will be- but still- they are not willing to work with me at all.

There’s probably going to be a lot of insurance litigation over this. Anyone trying to get insurance benefits will need to make sure they’ve followed all the rules in their policy.  As the other post notes, shows aren’t likely to collect on insurance for voluntary cancellations- it likely needs to be mandatory. The shows will have to follow the city’s lead, both white respect to closing and with respect to opening, to protect their positions

Yes, BwayBaby2, I'm in same situation. I have April 15 ticket to Lehamn and can't get anything from Ticketmaster re: cancel.  I wondered if anyone had inside info from actors, stage workers, etc.

If NY has thousands of deaths and more sick, how can Cuomo let theaters open before May?

Bway Baby, I agree re: Lehman and no cooperation re: ticketmaster. I can't see going on April 15. Wouldn't they have to rehearse after being out all this time.  I tried to select "sell these seats," but it didn't allow me to, yet that show had alot of resales prior to 30 day cancellation.

Theaters are not opening before May and the 15th of April will be here before you know it and they will refund you then!
