Theatreboi11: Sadly enough, I happened to stoll through best buy with another friend. Made a bee line to the soundtrack CD section and ooops, how did Mark fall into my basket?! Now I have Joanne, Roger, & Mark...and five more to go. And what about that extra CD I just got? Well my friend who was with me is now the proud owner of the soundtrack. Now lets see who wants to go to best buy with me the next time? (raises pinky finger to the bottom lip) MUHAHAHAHA! Cover #4 will be mine...(pets Mark CD Cover)
Damn, I'm psychotic.

I don't know if i could imagine buying more than one just to get more characters.

When they first announced this marketing ploy (different covers) I was really disgusted. It's such a dirty trick to pull - taking advantage of the rabid fan base for this show. But I didn't say anything on the board, because in the initial discussions about it, I kept seeing indications that people weren't going to 'but into it' - so to speak.
Now, reading through this thread, it's obvious that their plan worked. I think it's outrageous. It's one thing to sell multiple copies of a magazine using different covers (although, I must admit I even find that a little sleazy - sorry Addy) but to foist multiple CD sales on a demographic that can barely afford one copy - or worse, is spending money that isn't really theirs - is unconscienable.
They should be ashamed. Or they should be rewarded, I guess, for understanding the apparent need of this fan base.
Whoah, hello crazies. Who cares if the record companies are releasing multiple covers? They're out to make money, not to protect our wallets. They know people will buy multiple covers, people who are very able to stop themselves buying multiple covers and just settle with one.
If people want to buy them, the record company is perfectly justified cashing in on this.
I got the Mark cover which I am pleased with. I like the colour and I love Mark as a character and Anthony Rapp as an actor. In fact, I'm super-pleased.
"Jane, I've been dealt a blow - I've been dealt a blow, Jane."
Emcee - the thing is, people who buy multiple copies are technically getting something for their money - especially if they're collectors. But the gain is marginal at best, and pretty slimly justifiable. I really do find it cynical and coldly calculating on the part of the marketing staff. I guess I can just hope that those that do buy them find the happiness in their ownership that they're looking for.
Ultimately, I just can't imagine that Mr. Larson would be very happy about this Updated On: 9/29/05 at 08:50 AM
He wouldn't be happy about you spelling his name wrong either.
For collectors and fans, the gain from buying multiple covers is not marginal. It's important, and for some fans, the show is a true passion. Owning all the covers is important to them, and they're prepared to pay for them. The purchase is certainly justifiable. I'm sure they will be very happy with their purchases.
"Jane, I've been dealt a blow - I've been dealt a blow, Jane."
Part of me applauds the marketing staff for tapping into the lack of sanity in the RENThead community and using it, because that's their job. And I guess I think it's crazy to own eight copies of the same CD for a piece of cardboard, but then again, whatever floats your little boat.
jcz - I was afraid I would spell it wrong - sorry about that! And I tried to make it clear that I hoped they will be happy with them. I have no doubt that they're prepared to pay for them, and obviously will. I'm sorry if you feel like I was saying something negative about the people who make that choice - that's not my intention.
My story- I had to wait until 6:45 at night to go drive to Tower records to get my copy and was freaking out. Listened to OBC RENT songs that weren't going to be on the new cd.
So I get there and make a beeline for the soundtrack section and begin flipping through... and this is what I was mumbling.
So I grabbed the Roger and went to go find someone who worked there and said "There was no Mark. I need Mark. Do you have any in the back?" and of course he had no idea what I was talking about, so he brought me back over to the soundtrack section and pointed at the shelf below where I was looking. "All of our surplus is there."
It was actually a total surprise, since I ordered off Amazon. I sort of wanted Mark or Roger, but since I love Tracie Thoms, it's all good.
"Oh, good. After all, I can rub my stomach and pat my head at the same time, and I can do it with my eyes closed while whistling 'The Entertainer.' That's rhythm for you."
