Look, I know it's complicated. And requires advance notice of course. The show is cleaning up the last final shows on sales. Doesn't make up for the dreadful earlier months of course. Even if there is another show coming into a theatre, can you ever pay them off for a delay? Tell xyz show, hey give me 2 more weeks at xyz theatre, and I'll give you 200,000 up front to the investment team.... . But of course there are costs associated with a delay....but most shows fail anyway.....coukd a production just take payoff money for a delay?
There would have been absolutely no sane or logical reason to extend this a few more weeks. The fact that they ran as long as they did at such a loss is kind of surprising. I honestly thought they would have closed up a little sooner.
They were giving out rush tickets like candy since they announced their closing. They had a $79 average ticket prices last week and were no where close to hitting their weekly nut. They're selling out this week but still offering cheap tickets to fill the theater (standing room was offered all weekend).

At a huge financial loss. These shows are selling out as they’re heavily discounted or comped. They’re not making any profit but losing money even at the sold-out performances. Had they’ve been selling out at the top ticket prices and minimal discounted tickets, they wouldn’t be closing.

Sadly, they are filling the house at a loss due to an ATP that results in weekly losses even when the house is at 100% full. So, optically, it looked encouraging, but below the hood, the engine was still leaking oil.
This is the first show in a while that I had my heart set on seeing from the time it was announced. I actually contemplated delaying my move back out West until it came in. After realizing it would not be in during 2024, I went ahead and moved! Hopefully it will tour but I SO wish I could have seen this on Broadway. Oh well! Wishing them a great final performance.
They took out the maximum amount of priority loans afforded to them.
There have been more threads on this board about the show than weeks it ran on Broadway.

because not every broadway show can be as cool as Swept Away
Considering it realistically could’ve closed six weeks ago, I’d say it already had a decent built-in extension.

Yep. They should have announced a closing notice the day after the Tony Awards and closed the same day as Smash. You got a 3 week extension.

Extend. what a great idea. Hey investor's - why not lose even more money lured by the delusion of a last gap closing bump. What genius. The show bombed people. Yes, it had a few twinkles, but it was a massive financial flop.
If a Broadway show opens in the spring and sells poorly from the onset with no signs of significant improvement, it has every right to close / announce closing by the Fourth of July in this current economy. It’s as simple as that.

Yikes -- I hope the UN is aware.

I do wonder what Swept Away did to get their extension, and why Boop! and Real Women Have Curves couldn't. Maybe those theaters are going to be used?

They got more people to buy tickets (full price tickets, not papering).
Swept Away also wasn't kept running as long as either Boop or RWHC. They cut their losses pretty quickly which likely meant there was more willingness to pay for a short extension, particularly when it was selling.
They never once had a profitable week. I have no ill-will for this show but the delusion about it is really insane.

This makes sense. Thank you for the explanation.
