Why was Bare disliked?
#0Why was Bare disliked?
Posted: 1/11/05 at 4:49pmI saw Bare only once, in late May, and absolutely loved it. Nearly flawless score, rounded out characters, a well developed plot, and it reaches out to an audience that doesn't ordinarly see themselves on stage. How come the negative reaction from so many?

I was under the impression that the general reaction to the show was extremely positive...
And I agree with all of the good things that you mentioned about the show, TheGaIsSilent.

Posted: 1/11/05 at 7:00pmThe show is amazing. I don't understand how it could be negatively received.

Posted: 1/11/05 at 8:51pmThe only complaint I have heard was it having a score that, although it wasn't weak, wasn't great, either. Updated On: 1/11/05 at 08:51 PM

the score is WONDERFUL.

Posted: 1/11/05 at 8:55pmI think you're mistaking the fact that the Dodger Stages production of the show has been postponed/cancelled with the reception of the show. I have heard nothing but rave reviews for the show. It isn't being produced because some major financial backing fell out, but Dodgers is saving the theatre it was supposed to appear in, so that they can resume production as soon as possible.

Not to sound redundent... but I too have not heard one bad review of BARE.
and I'm not sure that the gay factor would have a whole lot to do with the show being unliked... If this were true than how would shows such as RENT and The Boy From Oz do so well?
Just a thought.

A lot of shows like BARE fall to the wayside and never get heard from again. Generally poor attendance, bad location, and not enough press. Now that it will have a new incarnation, I can guarantee it will be a hit. Off-Broadway shows when initially started were not meant to be commerical successes, but that has all changed! You have to fight to stay alive even off-Broadway nowadays!
The operative word being "buzz" ...and this show has got it. I wouldn't be surprised if it made the "leap" to Broadway after a few months. Just a prediction, and I haven't even seen the show.

Well, it needs to be re-mounted off-Broadway first

Posted: 1/11/05 at 10:10pmTony, you say, "now that it will have a new incarnation." What does that mean? As far as I know they still don't have the money to do the production yet.

Posted: 1/11/05 at 10:14pmYeah, I was wondering that, too. Last word from Damon was "Nope, not gonna happen in New York."

Posted: 1/12/05 at 12:59amAt the Kitchen Sink a few weeks back, Seth made a cryptic comment when introducing Jenna to perform about how Bare might not be dead yet. *shrugs* Don't know how much validity that statement had.

Obviously, It's not having the instant success it should be having because its an original musical with an original score. If it were the exact same plot, only told through the music of ... I don't know ... Flock of Seagulls, it would be HUGE!:) Wow, I'm all about cattiness today.
I love the story/score/cast of Bare and can't wait for it to have more success!:)

It just looks like a wounded puppy now. No one wants it. Except the ones that go "Awwww".
God, that sounded awful.
