I suspect that’s from the opening of the film before we go back in time. Maybe the film opens with Dorothy and Co. reporting to the Wizard that they’ve killed the Wicked Witch.
Ariana Grande's makeup styling looks really, *really* unnatural. Her look reminds me of the Wayan brothers' whiteface in the movie "White Chicks", or Ben Platt's "uncanny valley" face in "Dear Evan Hanson". What would be so "wrong", or unacceptable if Galinda were LatinX? I can't think of a single reason why they tried to make her look white. There's just no need for it.
For me, the song, "Popular" is much less believable coming from a character who's personal styling reflects her desire to be something she's not. Especially since she's singing it to another character who feels no need to hide, or cover up the fact that she's GREEN. Poor thing... Why'd Galinda feel a need to distort herself like that? Elphaba should sing the song to Galinda.
Not a fan of Erivo's gravelly vocal riff at the end of "Defying Gravity", either. I also agree with others about the excess of CGI.
So for me, what little was shown in the trailer sadly screams, "Nope". Not gettin' my money.

..........What? Ariana is not Latin American. She's white.
Looks terrible. This flat, melodramatic, digital, video game look that all big movies have adopted in recent years needs to end. It's just awful. Chu is a terrible director and such a dull choice to direct this too.

I unfortunately have to agree. I was rather excited when those set photos leaked because of the practical sets that were built. They ended up looking extremely over-produced and over-designed in the trailer because of all the CGI. This movie felt like it could be a perfect time to recall the magic of the MGM’s The Wizard of Oz, real movie artistry that doesn’t rely so heavily on computers. A shame.
She's Italian. My bad in describing her as LatinX. Should have said, Mediterranean. Still, she's gorgeous as she is. I still don't see why she was whitened up. No reason to do it and it makes her look awkwardly unnatural.

Miss Ponytail has been blackfishing so hard her whole career that when she finally drops it for a role, everyone thinks she's in Whiteface. I just have to laugh.

You people are why we can't have nice things."
Just speaking for myself I wasn't trying to be overly critical, I just felt that Erivo didn't sound good doing that riff on what is the most iconic song of the musical. Other than that I won't judge the movie until I see it.

Ariana Grande is white...
What you're referring to is all of the makeup and tanner she wears to make herself appear much darker.
I’m really surprised by all the hate this trailer is getting on here. I thought it looked stunning!
CGI does not surprise me or turn me away. It’s OZ - a world full of magic. CGI is expected. Based on all the sets they built, I’m guessing we’ll get a nice balance of CGI for huge moments and natural work on set for other moments. Hard to judge this over only one minute of footage
As for the comments on Erivo’s “strained” singing. There’s a difference between “strain” and “grit.” She is using a healthy grit by utilizing the “false” vocal folds. It’s actually very impressive technique. I’m just happy to hear live vocals that aren’t over produced with auto-tuning like most modern movie musicals.
I think we have to look at this trailer with the idea of the mass population watching the Super Bowl and what type of clips are going to draw in people. Especially non theatre people. Y’all are entitled to your opinions, but I don’t think we have any reason not to be optimistic about this film.
Also I've always assumed Elphaba is a little older. Glinda and Nessarose are college freshman age, but Elphaba is Nessa's older sister. Idk what the book says but for all we know Elphaba could be years older than them
I thought it looked vibrant and interesting, but was perplexed by the fact that a) they'd let us hear the big money note in a trailer...and b) that they lowered it for Cynthia Errivo. I mean she can hit the original, right? It didn't sound flat to me just noticeably lower and less exciting. (And I still don't think two parts is a great move.)
I thought 5 things, It has a very generic cgi videogame look, Ariana Grande's acting is very, very poor, Glinda looks 12 and Elphaba looks 45, Michelle Yeoh's acting is great, that last note of Defying Gravity is just terrible, abortive and can't be true.
