My high school shows were Pirates of Penzance (freshman year) and The Last Five Years (senior year). My school hardly ever did musicals, so I didn't get much of a chance to do stuff in HS. I did lots of stuff outside of school though, including a new musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey called In Your Eyes. Loved that show.
"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being."

Holy crap. So far people have listed that they've done Les Mis, Sweeney Todd, The Last Five Years, Parade, Ragtime, Dreamgirls and Chicago. IN HIGH SCHOOL? Those are all crazy shows, and I love that high schools have the guts to actually produce them. Whether or not they're any good is a totally different matter, but kudos for having the balls!
Parade. Holy Crap. We all LOVED Parade and the school approved for a senior to direct it at the end of the year. They had no set, just a confederate flag and a black curtain. It was INCREDIBLE. It was better than the shows I see on National Tour.
uh, you wanna talk about boring.... We did: Little shop of Horrors - good but wish i were the lead Fiddler on the Roof - not fun. use to be my fav. musical before that. Annie Get Your Gun - I HATE THIS MUSCIAL.
I wish we had done the last 5 years..if only....
Right now, my college is doing The It Girl, so if any of ya'll are in the Birmingham, Alabama area, be sure to check it out.
I was in a rather well-received high school production of "My Fair Lady." Though my school followed it up with the Hal Prince "Show Boat", casting a pop tenor as Ravenal and a non-singing dancer (I kid you not) as Magnolia. The comment made at the Trocadero after one of her numbers by the owner unintentionally brought down the house. (The one where asked his opinion, he responds: "Awful!").
Have sat through ghastly productions of "The Music Man", "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown", "Pippin", "Anything Goes". However was taken with these school's productions of "Bye, Bye Birdie", "Crazy For You", "Forum", "The King and I" (very impressive for a high school) and "Oliver!"
Our school has done Anything Goes! Into the Woods Pirates of Penzance Guys and Dolls The Music Man (this year)
It's funny, because our Sarah and Sky from Guys and Dolls last year are the same two actors who are playing Marion and Harold this year. They both have beautiful voices, but are the driest actors i've ever seen, and had one up on the competition for the roles as they are a real life couple. "They have chemistry" is what our director said when asked why they both got the roles, as opposed to some of the more qualified people. Welcome to show business.
The best school musicals I have seen where one's where the students could convincly portray the characters, because they were the right age, etc...shows like Grease, West Side Story, Joseph, Oliver and even Annie were very enjoyable to watch. However I went to a completely homogenous (white) Catholic school which tried to do versions of Fiddler, Once on This Island and Titanic. The middle school version I saw of Fiddler was awful, the kids tried but an 8th grader whose voice was changing couldn't handle Teyve...Once on This Island was another disaster. I fell in love with the music and the story, but every kid in it was white which ruined alot of the songs (Mama Will Provide in particular) and just made the story line seem a little akward. Titanic would have been fine, but the school tried to hard to "make the ship sink like it did on Broadway" and it was almost comic. By far, the best school musical I have seen was Starmites...I think most of the audience had never seen a professional production of the show and so wasn't biased or jaded in any way. The story was perfect and creative and the music could be handled by talented, but younger, singers.
"Commit a little mortal sin, its good for the soul"
My daughter's school has done some great musicals...West Side Story, Chicago...but now they are doing Honk! I'm trying to be supportive...but UGH! Has anyone seen this...I don't even want to invite anyone!
I didn't know anything about the show, so I watched a friend's copy of it done by a children's theater. Of course, I didn't expect much, but I didn't think the songs were "catchy" and I thought the whole thing was silly and rather childish. There are some really talented kids in the show, so I'm hoping it will "grow" on me.
I cant stand Honk. But anyways I enjoyed our schools production of Les Mis but the turn-table was a bi*ch to make. Beauty and the Beast is a really hard tech show also but a perfect one for a high school production. Little Shop is perfect for any high school. Tommy, well not so sure. Our director (crazy lady who was on extreme makeover) got the idea to do Tommy after seeing it a Walnut hill. But shows like Oklahoma are essential for any high school to do. I can’t wait for the rights for Millie to come out so we can do it!
Who says blondes have more fun on the French Riviera?
There's a school in a nearby city that is famous for doing totally inapropriate shows for high schools one year and then a totally boring show the next. In order, here's everything they've done in the last few years...
Cabaret Hello, Dolly! Man of La Mancha A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown Gypsy The Fantasticks Assasins Oklahoma!
For a high school to do Cabaret, Man of La Mancha and Gypsy is unheard of. Forum is a bit iffy with the brothel and everything, but La Mancha has a rape scene and centers around a whore, Gypsy is about strippers, Assasins is about the obvious, and Cabaret is, well, Cabaret. I love all those shows, but I'm so surprised that the director has kept his job. Next thing you know they'll be doing The Full Monty!
