Glad I caught it last month. A very good time, indeed. I never thought I’d say that when this was announced. Very ambitious, inventive with a great cast, especially Slater.
Disappointing, if only for the amount of ambition and effort that went into making the show get off the ground. The names associated with the music and lyrics scream a lack of cohesion, but it actually worked quite well. I think many in the cast have a bright future—not just Ethan Slater, but I think he’ll go far—and despite the naysayers, this wasn’t a total train wreck. Not gonna lie, though. I really thought Nickelodeon would find a way to keep them through the year.
Such a conflicting show: loved it live, hated the soundtrack, and grew to despise it near the end. It would've lasted longer in a smaller house. Anyway, I hope the best for the cast (especially Pearl, Squidward and Spongebob, such standouts) but poorly put together doesn't make success.
For anyone wondering (as I've seen about a million people on Twitter saying "why don't they just move theaters" etc.), they don't have the money to. Simple (sponge) as that. If they were making a decent amount of money, they probably could pull it off, but the move would be too expensive. Honestly, they probably would've closed soon without the renovations. Their grosses have been subpar for a while now.
(P.S. I know this has been discussed elsewhere A LOT and I'm not the first person to say this, I'm just relaying the message from the other threads about their grosses in case people have that same question I'm seeing everywhere).
I can’t believe my life comes to spending my last Broadway money choosing to see Spongebob’s last show over Bernadette friggin Peter’s last show in Hello Dolly. That’s how good the show is (to me)
Uh, without a doubt choose Dolly. I hated every second of this show, but thought it was well-done, but just a mis-fire from the beginning. So many of those songs should have been cut. I don't get why the guy who wrote "Bikini Bottom Day" didn't just write the whole score. Was anyone really showing up to hear a David Bowie song (that was awful)?
