They have all that money for lighting and couldn’t come up with a better way to make her fly?

As a high school drama teacher I can’t believe the balls that teacher had doing an illegal production of Wicked (and these videos don’t help me having to explain to teenage girls year after year how the rights aren’t available…)

IMO high school musicials can be quite good if you have the right cast and don’t try to do things beyond your budget like this director.

Why on earth will it affect you one way or the other?  Do you anticipate that there will be a government mandate and that you be forced to attend these productions?  I'm sure that doing the show will make thousands of HS kids very happy.

According to the description, this is an English International School in South Korea. They just did a couple songs from the show, and the production was completely student-produced. Bad flying effects aside, it's actually pretty impressive when you consider it's all done by high schoolers, in terms of both performance and design.

The flying seems fine to me for a high school production.  It’s certainly no worse than what Mary Poppins did on Broadway with millions of dollars in their budget, for example.

Didn’t Spider-Man also have issues also? I didn’t see it but read about injuries associated with the show..

Exactly!  High schools have been using Flying by Foy to do PETER PAN for decades. WICKED is far less demanding.

Now that’s a show I would love to see a high school try to do. Haha!

This actually looks pretty damn good for a high school.

All high school musicals are not created equal. Some are exceptional and they're how most people get interested in theatre in the first place so they serve way more good than harm. I don't mind laughing at bad ones, sometimes it's deserved and usually because of poor directing or biting off more than they can chew, but I can guarantee there will be some tremendous HS productions of Wicked at some point.

I loved the polite subdued applause at the end. I was expecting the standard teenage screams. cheeky

All the money at my public high school seemed to go toward football, baseball, and track while the theatre club was lucky if the Industrial Arts teacher threw together some semblance of a set and parents got together to sew costumes. It didn’t matter, because for those of us who didn’t like sports, we finally were able to feel like we belonged to a team. We may not have sang, danced or acted well, but all our families filled the school auditorium for every performance and cheered us on. When I got to play the lead and looked out on the standing ovation during my bow, I thought, “This is MY touchdown.” So, while making fun of YouTube videos of bad high school musical performances can be entertaining, I think it’s done with a good sense of humor, not malice. At least it should be.

That was damn good. Kudos to them! The only reason her voice was momentarily off was because she got turned around and swung. I think the lighting looks great. Kudos for body diversity in lead casting. All around bravo!!!

I'm all for having a laugh at a shoddy production. We all love the Peter Pan flubs. This was mighty fine imho.

I’m surprised there isn’t already a Wicked School Edition licensed by MTI.

If anything this has made me excited for when High Schools get the rights to do the show!

Plenty of community theatre groups in Australia has performed WICKED with varying levels of success and it’s great to see how they all reinvent the show.

While I do agree she was great, I think we all know that amateurs singers trying to do those runs can be a really mixed bag.
