For any musical to be one of my favorites, it has to have a lot more going on that a love story...
I do like Subways are For Sleeping, but not for the love story- more for Phyllis Newman's character and her songs, especially "Shoo-In".
I guess if it's musicals where the most significant throughline has to do with romantic love, my favorite would be Last 5 Years.

[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

Beauty and the Beast for the sheer timeless romance. Probably moreso the film than the show, though. Just beautiful.

Subways are for Sleeping is one of my favorite guilty pleasures recordings. The score by Jule Styne is top notch and by listening to it alone you would wonder why the show was a flop. The problem was in the book and in the plot --which were both weak. The audiences never bought into the weak main storyline (the Sydney Chaplin and Carol Lawrence characters), but adored the supporting comic storyline (the Orson Bean and Phyllis Newman characters) --which there wasn't enough of. Also the main storyline was a little too unbelievable --why would a successful journalist give up her career to live on the streets of NYC? There were also major chemistry problems between Chaplin and Lawrence, who didn't enjoy working together and evidently it came across in their performances. The show still ran for almost a year thanks mostly to the publicity caused by David Merrick's infamous newspaper stunt. Phyllis Newman also won a Tony for her performance beating out Barbra Streisand from I Can Get it For You Wholesale.

"You pile up enough tomorrows, and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering." --Harold Hill from The Music Man

Spamalot- lol

I really should have thought of Light in the Piazza.

Also, the Broadway version of Cinderella, Pal Joey, and Guys and Dolls (sorry, just love Frank Sinatra...yeah, I know he wasn't in cinderella!)

But I am still obsessed with Aida and it is my top pick!

You must remember all the same that at the crux of every game is knowing when it's time to leave the table... And it's important to be artful in your exit. No turning back, you must accept the con is done... It was a ball, it was a blast. And it's a shame it couldn't last. But every chapter has to end, you must agree.
