It's gotta be another Waco/OC sympathizer nut job. On tax day and all.
My instinct is w/Playbilly. Not based on anything really. Just a feeling.

My bf was a stern-faced Marathon finish line volunteer for a number of years and we had our first date many years ago on the afternoon after his marathon gig. He took me to the spaghetti dinner for marathoners and volunteers. The runners were so great, asking me with my mouthful of pasta about my "time." It would take me three days, I replied. It was my first time in a ballroom filled with jocks who were not a-holes.

Waco and the Oklahoma City bombing were two totally different incidents. The Branch Davidians at Waco were a doomsday cult but weren't fundamentally anti-tax/anti-government. The OKC crew were anti-government.
Someone speculated that if the NYC marathon hadn't been cancelled this might have happened there but I don't think so. Boston's Patriots' Day (recognized primarily in Massachusetts and Maine), on the same day as tax day and the marathon, make the timing too good for an extreme tea-bagger type to miss.

Timothy McVeigh timed the Oklahoma City bombing to coincide with the second anniversary of the Waco seige.
A close school friend of mine volunteered at the event. Thank God he's OK--but just an absolutely tragic situation.
I feel for those who saw, I pray for those who fell, I bow to those who turned and ran directly toward the swell.
Thank you First Responders!
The conspiracy theory I was most stunned to hear was the speculation that it was done by a North Korean.
Thanks for your thoughts Namo. I used to work in the marathon based fundraising world though I never got a chance to staff Boston. Pretty sure everyone I still keep up with from that world is ok. It seemed like an odd time to detonate the bomb if they were looking for maximum impact. The loosening security theory makes the timing make a lot of sense.
It doesn't surprise me that people are coming up with theories to who did it. I have a feeling all those wonderful conspiracy theorists are all going to eventually claim that the Government is behind this and everyone involved is an actor. Those people are sick.
And maybe not important because of what happened, but I really feel for the people who didn't get to finish the race. I mean, it's tough training for these races and some people even fly halfway around the world to participate.
I really hope they find whoever did this and give them the worst punishment ever.
While I hear what you are saying about the runners, I'm going to guess that the vast majority of them are ok with just being alive and unharmed.

One of the stories making the rounds is that some runners kept going from the finish line to Mass General to donate blood...
There was a political cartoon from this afternoon (that I cannot find) that had the image of runners crossing the finish line and running straight to donate blood. It was amazing.
CNN reporting that the FBI have been inside bldg in Revere, Mass, investigating. Not sure why.
(super cute new guy on CNN. Australian i think.)

BTW, I creep the board but don't often post. Tonight is an exception because I'm distraught about the bombings and am awaiting news of a hospitalized friend in Boston. So please forgive me for posting so often on both boards tonight.

I think that all depends on what kind of impact you were trying to make.
If you detonate the bombs earlier you are targeting athletes from all over the world most of which were not Americans.
If you do it around the 4 hour mark like what happened yesterday you are targeting "regular" people who trained hard to do this race. People who have their families at the finish line waiting to celebrate this accomplishment with them.
If the goal is to impact American values and to potentially injure the "average American" then the impact is far greater at the later point in the race, imo.
Has anyone else read other international articles about the bombings. I'm curious as to how other countries are reporting the events.
two brothers and two sisters who, out of sheer fear, demanded Monday that the Boston trip count as Ms. Mikhael’s last to the United States.
I'm sure this came out of a place of fear but this isn't just an American problem. Acts such as the one that unfolded yesterday can happen anywhere. Even Canada.

Post away. I hope you get good news on your friend. I don't know what your denomination is but if you'd like you can light a virtual candle at St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC - www.saintpatrickscathedral.org/light_a_candle.php
Tragedy in Boston brought runner’s high crashing down
I may be the only one here who has ever heard of John Green, but he's one of my role models and heroes, and I (biased-ly) think he makes a great point
I didn't assume it was North Korea. I was stunned to hear it mentioned.
I wasn't stunned to hear it mentioned, but I found it to be a pretty outlandish and borderline ridiculous suggestion when I saw it popping up on social media.
North Korea likes to chest pound and act tough, but they know as well as we do that if they were to stage an attack on the US that we would effectively wipe them off the map so fast they wouldn't have time to regret their actions.
They may overstate their nukes and their ability to actually strike on American soil, but they have a more significant arsenal than bombs in trash cans.
They are now saying that ONLY two bombs (the ones that were detonated) were found.
And the NY Post is saying the FBI is questioning a 20-year-old Saudi man.
The sources said that, after the man was grabbed by police, he smelled of gunpowder and declared, “I thought there would be a second bomb.”
He also asked: “Did anyone die?

At this point, I would stop following the NY Post.
